Just wanted to put out a few rules real quick, this is meant to be a discussion, and not a youtube dump : p Posting videos of your favorite song is okay, BUT plz post one at a time, in a spoiler tag and plz post at least one or two sentences about why you like it, and what makes you feel that its a sad song, whether its lyrics or melody or a memory tied to the song or whatever : p

But yeah, so Im a sucker for a sad melody with heart felt singing and all that : p Ive said before that I hate over the top music, but music with a slow tempo and a low tone and carried with a dark atmosphere can really affect me. I really like "sad" music, I think its really beautiful and inspiring.

Ive been way obsessed with one the past two days now actually, Ive heard of the song before but never really gave it much of a chance before, mostly due to being into other songs at the time. But Im way into it lately, often playing it in my head when doing other things : p

(Rob makes two mistakes in that recording btw : p Poor Rob : p)

I think bass guitar is awesome for this kinda music, though. Being in a lower octave than standard guitar, it really works great for that low, flowing and sleepy sound. I think it can sound beautiful when played in this style. (I really wanna write songs like that : p)

With music I consider sad, I usually go for melody and not lyrics. Tbh, I generally dont pay attention to most lyrics in music unless I really like the artists a bunch : p So I never really judge this kinda stuff by lyrics : p

But, with this one I shared here, I actually do think the lyrics have that feeling, like they can inspire those feelings in you. Ive never actually looked them up or anything, and am judging this by what I can hear and make out : p But I really like them so far.

But yeah, what do you think qualifies as "sad music"? What makes music sad to you? What songs do you consider to be "sad"?
Also, what do you think about "sad" music? Do you love it? Hate it? Do you think it just makes depressed people more depressed? Do you think it can be beautiful and pleasing on the ears even when you feel completely happy?

I think for sad music to be good, it has to have a level of acceptance in the song... it doesn't have to be positive, just accepting of the situation and mood. That's just me, though.

With " sad " music I usually hold the set of the melodies to be on par with the lyrics. Depending on what the lyrics are and who is singing it could create for some very melancholic situation. Biggest thing I think of is Simon & Garfunkel's I am a rock. Well it's better to just post it, it has a good combination of sad lyrics that some of us very introverted people and perhaps other can connect too which is another thing as well.

What do you mean when you say "acceptance", btw? Im not totally sure I understand what you mean by that.

Also, the song you posted is interesting, I mean I only got through about 3:30 of it. But to me, it felt like a high energy, inspiring song, which usually feels uplifting to me : p I mean I think sad music can be inspiring, but in a different way. That felt like more of a getting pepped up kinda song : p
Its interesting to see what someone else would consider sad music : p

I actually think the song you posted is funny : p I mean, melody wise, I think thats a really cheerful and upbeat song : p I never would have thought that it could inspire "sad" feelings in someone before : p
So do you place more focus on lyrics over melody, then?

I place both melody and lyrics to be equally important but there doesn't need to be any lyrics for a song to be sad. It's gotta set the mood I feel, for a song without any lyrics I can think of certain video game music that sounds sad. Especially piano pieces like this one.

I suppose the music feels sadder in the last part of the song but the lyrics are describing depression and isolation throughout.
Umm... I guess when I say they have acceptance... I guess that means I don't appreciate songs that revel in sadness and cultivate it... because, in a way, that's just a way to make you feel better. I'd rather have a song that's honest and accepting of the reality of the mood/situation.

If you're looking for sad, here you go

This Song captures the Moment when everything seems lost and hope seems dead.
No matter if it is a burial, war or other tragic and soul-crushing depressing imagery: This song suits it.

(Why do we mark it spoilers again?)

Doing the exact opposite of what MonaWare said.

I'd say those were sad

And so is this:

This is about his girlfriend dying in a car accident

"Donna" is about a girlfriend leaving him and breaking his heart

"Angel Baby" is about a girl saying her boyfriend makes her feel like she's in heaven and begging him not to leave her

"How can I tell my mom and dad" is about a teenage girl having a pregnancy and having to hide it from her parents, complementing whether she should run away, tell them, or do something she regrets

These are all sad and real

~~

Did you even click on this songs?

Did you even click on this songs?
I did. But i didn't mean the songs themselfs.
I meant that you were supposed to post only 1 Song at the time, hide it as Spoiler (Don't ask me why) and write one or two sentences about the song in the same post.
MonaWare clearly ordered it in the Original Post.

As for the songs themself: They kinda don't affect me. I don't know why. Maybe because i need a sad Melody, maybe because of my Autism or maybe because English isn't my main language.

Ah, I kind of skimmed thru the OP so that was my mistake. I posted those when I just woke up.
They do have a sad melody however, the soulful melancholic vocals with the echoing, moody guitar

I think I understand what you mean by that. I think lydics, while not really making a song sad, can portray a sad story. I have one song that makes me think of that actually. Its a song about a man whos dream was to fly his lawn chair into the sky with balloons, and he did it. And after he did it he hiked up into the woods and killed himself. Its based on a true story apparently, so they wrote a song about it : p Theres are the lyrics here-

You made your mark on me
You laid your past to sleep
No other man went here
Alone under the light

Anyone else would slit from sleeve to shoulder
Anyone else would not deserve your life
It seems that all lines convalesce the other side
It sense that all Ive worried for is vain

Larry climbs into his lawn chair, waves her goodbye
Unties from the post, races towards the sky
Takes a sip out of his beer and says it looks amazing
He said it looks amazing

Climbs until he cant think, cant hear himself
Shoots at the balloons and falls to the ground
Jumps out of his chair and says it was amazing.
He said it was amazing
Get me down
Let me down
Get me down
Now that Im miles above you hear
Did I stamp the last out of all my fears?
Is there nothing left for me to do?
Is there nothing left for me to do?
Is there nothing left for me to do?
Went out on a hike and he never came back again.

Its really not a song I listen to to get those kinda feelings that were talking about here, but I think its a sad story.

And @Count Cannoli spoilers because threads like these generally become youtube dumps, which cause some peoples computers to crash, keeping them from even opening the thread. Its so that the thread can continue to be active and create conversation.

ah yes time to be emo

The first half of this song is just instrumental but it's a really beautiful song altogether. Both the melody and lyrics give it a feeling of melancholy. I like sad music because of its ability to provoke your innermost feels and it's just more meaningful than happy/upbeat music. I don't think a song needs both a sad melody and sad lyrics in order to be considered sad, though. Like, a rock song with depressing lyrics, for example, would be considered sad to me.
