I'm gonna be crazy and take a third option and say Super Mario Bros. 3 is the true direct sequel to Super Mario Bros. Now i know what your saying
WTF TB100! HOW CAN THE THIRD GAME BE A DIRECT SEQUEL TO THE FIRST GAME????? Well what i mean by that is,
It's the only one that really feels like a "Sequel" in my opinion. SMBTLL is practically Kaizo Mario 1, and SMUSA has widely different gameplay, & it pretty much wiped itself out of canon since it was just a dream in the end. and SMBS is practiaclly just a shitty PC hack of the original. SMB3 on the other hand, took the original's gameplay and improved on every aspect of it. Having much better controls, more varied levels, more Power-Ups to play with, (Hammer Brother suit for the win.). and it introduced a crapton lot of elements into the franchise, (The Koopalings, Airships, The Maps, Chain Chomps, Dry Bones, Twomps, The three hit system for Mario, Boos, The hammer brother varients and so much more.) now don't get me wrong, Mario the Lost levels & SMB2 are still good games, (SMUSA moreso then SMBTLL.) and technically SMBTLL is the direct sequel to Mario 1 since it came out a year after the original. but in terms of gameplay, Mario 3 is the only real sequel in my opinion.

Dude that's great, i'm making it an option on the pool. bravo, never would have thought of that, i was just going based off of the development of each game in how they where intended to be the mario 1 sequel.
