Mario Kart 8 SUCKS (and wii is awesome!)

Really wish Mario Kart wii's online didn't have to shut down. Anyone else remember playing this game and really enjoying it? It was the best game in the series in my opinion, I never had problems with it at all. Unlike most who seem to think the items are unfair or something.

This is the Mario Kart wii thread, you'll be able to talk about Mario Kart wii and maybe the other kart games for a bit, but don't forget this is mainly for Wii. So, let's get into why I like this game better than 8

First off.

  • NO COINS
Pretty much everyone here can agree coins were the worst thing to add, I know it was in the first Mario Kart but for gods sake, keep it away from the freaking item box. I know it gives you a speed boost, but it's useless when you have nothing to protect your behind, when you don't have protection you'll lose that coin pretty fast.

Not only is it annoying, but it's probably the most useless "item" (if you could call it one) in the whole series. It does nothing in the long run of the race. If you don't have protection in first, you're most likely gonna lose. Also on the last lap, behind everyone...I don't need a coin, I need something to either help myself or to screw someone over.

  • Items were not based on distance
This is probably the 2nd worst thing that comes to mind when I think of Mario Kart 8. Mario Kart was meant to be crazy fun. People in last would get a better chance of making it to a higher position. There is no chance at making it higher if EVERYBODY GET'S THE SAME ITEM AS YOU. Oh, you got 3 mushrooms? good luck, that's what the other four people in front of you got.

Not to mention, more often then not you'll even get a worse item than the people in front of you. What's the deal? I got a green shell in 6th, the two people just in front of me got triple shooms, and I got a green shell. That didn't cost me the game but holy damn ! NINTENDO!
I mean, come on! AND WHO IN THE RIGHT MIND GIVES SOMEBODY TRIPLE RED SHELLS IN 2ND?! GET GOOD IF YOU ARE THAT FAR BEHIND TO GET THOSE.

  • one item
In Mario Kart wii, it allowed me to have two items to protect myself! TWO! now, I get one, that wouldn't be a problem all that much if it wasn't for coins. (Man, I just really hate coins, don't I?) But from the switch trailer, you could clearly see slots for two items. Let's hope this is fixed, along with the coin problem.

-----------------------

Mario Kart 8 has a lot of flaws, so much so that it is more rage than actual fun. Mario Kart wii however? that was something called fun, and little to no rage. Of course, you'd have your funky kongs bumping you off the stage but at the end of the day all those funky's weren't a problem, I could easily catch up to them with any character. Mario Kart wii isn't perfect either, the karts were useless and only CPU's used them.

Join any modded MKWii server, everyone will be using bikes. Aside from Billy, Billy likes karts. People will make the argument "But it's Mario KART! not Mario bike" and to that, I say suck it up! if you want to use a kart, by all means. You can get better drifts from those and I won tons of online games with the default kart. It isn't impossible. I also loved the fact I could be in front for long periods of time without worrying about items, as I'll always have two, and if one breaks, easily take out the other item, get another item box and back to two items!

Did I mention Mario Kart 8 promotes not using items in first? if you use one, you better pray to god you get another item that isn't a coin. Also did you notice the amount of green shells that hit you? was never like this in the other Kart games, and if it was I probably have dumb luck in Kart 8.

(The title's also a joke, I like Mario Kart 8.)

Well Mario Kart 8 is fun and all, but I really enjoy Mario Kart Wii due to its chaotic item pick up. Seriously though, 4 lightning and 2 blue shells in just one match isn't fair, but man was it fun to play at times you're not breaking your controllers. Honestly I enjoyed 7 a lot more, but Wii holds that special place with everyone using characters like Funky Kong, Funky Kong, Funky Kong, Funky Kong, Funky Kong, Funky Kong, Funky Kong, and the occasional Rosalina. Oh and let's not forget Funky Kong in first place.

Actually, I only agree with the coins part, it's abnoxious to get 4 to 5 coins in a row, and it seems to be even worse online, like the coin was meant as a placeholder for bad connection or something.

However, Mario Kart Wii's items were based on distance as well, if not, then they were based on raking and not on rarety. I remember Mario Kart Super Circuit and before, you could get stars in second place, that was nice, felt more random.
I also don't mind the one item slot, since everyone has only one item slot, it's as hard to protect yourself than it is to get the first place back. The only problem here is that because of the coin item, you end up with an open window to get hit. The same happened in Super Mario Kart. The singular item slot doesn't work with the coin item, at all...

Solution? Either remove the darned coin item or give us 2 slots so we still have a chance to get a defensive item.

That Mario Kart on the Switch has 2 slots so I guess that saves everyone now.

Yep, like Kyon said, glad they at least showed us that they thought about it, I sure hope it comes true, even if they keep the freaking coin in.

In the end, I'm not a fan of Mario Kart Wii, even though I played the heck out of that game.

Since Mario Kart DS, the franchise feels soft and dull. I loved the bounciness of Double Dash!

I like MKWii and I'll always have a huge nostalgic soft spot for it due to it being one of my first exposures to the Mario franchise, but it has nothing to MK8. Sure Wii has definitely done some things better then 8 (Better Roster, no coins, Wario's Bike, etc), but MK8 is just a better game IMO.

It took the main ideas that Mario Kart Wii had and improved on nearly every aspect of it.
from graphics, to item balancing, to gameplay, to music, It's just a better game IMO despite my problems with it.

Eh... MKWii never really did it for me. Dunno, there was just something about it that was "meh" to me.
Was not a fan of the bloom lighting (never really am) and somehow the character models looked even more unnatural than they did on the gamecube (while re-using the same models). For some reason everything ends up looking metallic or like plastic to me.
It also sucked that you had to take your thumb off the control stick every time you wanted to do a trick when using a decent controller.
And no, I'm not going to use a wiimote or a wiimote and nunchuck as controllers. That just feels wrong for a game like Mario Kart. :/
The motion controls where about as accurate as you'd expect them to be. ....meaning I'd rather use ROB the robot to control my game.

There's also something about the design of the tracks that didn't quite click right with me. Not sure why.

So what do y'all think? Double Dash or MK Wii? :sgrin: For me it's definitely Double Dash.

I did actually prefer Wii to 8 as broken as so many things in Wii were. In 8 the items feel neutered. Falling off no also longer has the same impact as it did before. It feels like the emphasis on design was on maintaining a constant pace which I did not like.

Honestly, I have to agree that Mario Kart 8 doesn't really live up to the past titles (at least, the home console ones). I mean, it's fun yes. But I just didn't seem to have as much fun playing it as I did earlier titles like Mario Kart Double Dash, DS, Wii and 7.

The coins were definitely a part of it (I honestly never got why they brought these back at all), and people online will tell you how much the game loves giving me the coin power up at the worst possible time. But fundamentally it just feels like something is missing to me. Maybe it's because I just can't enjoy the game's soundtrack as much as previous titles, since I consider the songs less 'memorable' in general. Maybe it's because (as Big Magma said) the items feel neutered and knocking off opponents is mostly pointless here. Perhaps its the battle mode being what it is.

Either way, I know I had more fun with past titles in the series.

Yeah I agree on the music as I mentioned previously. From my own perspective, while an orchestrated soundtrack helps make something feel "grand" or "big"(which is why it was such a big deal when certain cartoons started the trend of using orchestras for their soundtracks), I feel like it leaves the music feeling less distinct. There are less ways to make the music sound distinct aside from it sounding "orchestrated". I also feel like a saxophone for the F-Zero tracks was completely wrong. There are some awesome pieces of music still, one of my favorites being Dragon Driftway.

I loved Big Blue's music, it's gorgeous. There's a lot of variety in the soundtrack, not all it orchestrated, for example, Electrodome and SNES Rainbow road.
Each have their style and work really well with the mood of the game. Dragon Driftway is actually my least favorite.

Each to their own, I'm being a bit of an oldfag and miss games as a whole having their own distinct style. Like for certain tracks you could probably recognize what game they are from from their musical style or instrumentation alone.

Yeah, I was just saying I like the soundtrack, but you're right, F-Zero tracks don't sound like their from F-Zero. And I really enjoy the F-Zero soundtrack, btw.

An orchestrated soundtrack can work really well and feel incredibly distinct if done properly (see, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2), but it feels like a lot of games just... go for too much of the same style when using one, as you say. For example, as well as Mario Kart 8, I never found Zelda Skyward Sword's soundtrack all that memorable either. Ballad of the Goddess, yes. The rest of the songs... no.

I wouldn't call MK8's music "orchestrated". It has much more of a big band feel like 3D World's soundtrack. Which, honestly, I prefer over the huge, grand orchestra performances. I'd rather feel like I'm surrounded by 5 powerful, distinct and jolly instruments than 50 try-hard instruments that all sort of melt into each other.
I'm also glad that they didn't just abandon synthesized instruments altogether.
I will concede that MK8 doesn't have as many memorable compositions in its nitro courses...
...but goddamn, when they nail it, MAN DO THEY EVER NAIL IT! DAT ELECTRODOME YO

And when they get the retro course songs right... MMM-MMM WHOOO HAAA

Dat Wario Stadium :sgrin:

but... then other times... they just dont...

...like Sherbert Land. It's just not nearly as energetic as the original. :S<:[: It just sounds tired...
But then others sound great again. ^^ Like Tick-Tock Clock (except for the random "doot" they added

...in other words, it's good. c:

Maybe it's another case of composers in previous generations having to rely on kick-ass compositions as opposed to fancy instrumentation. Back then all they had were soundfonts and synths and stuff so they had to come up with catchy melodies instead.
I think a lot of the distinct...ness of the older Mario Karts came from the soundfonts they used.

But yeah, sadly most nitro MK8 tracks aren't the kinda tracks you can sing along to very well. :/

Actually, you know what? I'm taking that back. I'm listening to some of them right now and they are fine.
It's just that.... well... hm... I.... actually.... I DON'T KNOW! @0@
