Shantae HGH is classified as "Indie" on Steam. I didn't think Shantae would be considered Indie.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is in the category indie games in the 3DS e-shop as well. But I don't know the exact definition of ¨indie game¨.
Well, I thought "Indie" were games made by individual developers or small companies, games from people with not much experience, putting their idea to work. But I thought WayForward was a bigger company than that, I never saw them as "Indie".

They are still realtively small-scale compared to big guys like Nintendo, but I think it has more to do with the fact that they crowdfund the budget for their games, something Nintendo just won't do.

I never saw WayForward as an "indie" dev, I really don't think they ever really did either. Regardless, I'm sure they embrace the title because being an "indie dev" is a hip, cool thing to be these days... Rock on guys! Milk that shit as long as you can. Do what you gotta do!

As far as the rating, HGH is a bit more violent than the previous games (not like, Mortal Kombat level or anything, it's just that the improved visuals and physics provide for more realistic fights) so I understand the rating. Implied violence and dark humor as well. Nothing to worry about, it's the same Shantae we know and love. I don't think it deserves that rating at all, really.

Theory time!

After seeing the beginning of HGH another theory popped up in my head.
Is it possible that, besides shapeshifting and hairwhipping, Shantae has another ability: dreaming the future?
Because in both The Pirate's Curse and 1/2 Genie Hero she dreamt about the dangers about to come true.

But I dunno for sure. That's why I call it a theory. (duh):shantdance:

Huh..Not something I've ever thought about but it's an interesting observation. I would most certainly point to her genie side as the reason for this.

Just beat HGH. it was pretty good but they just didn't top Pirates Curse sadly, because i expected to but that's fine since the Risky Mode will come eventually and i just want the pirate tools back. That being said i wasn't dissatisfied but considering the hype i expected more. Maybe i should not have fallen victim to hype. it just "feels" incomplete, though considering future additions i wouldn't be surprised. Also PLEASE WAYFORWARD, GIVE US DLC FEATURING DUNGEONS. I'd say its not as good as Pirates Curse but superior to the first two. Also anyone else thinks it feels like Risky's Revenge 2.0

A bit of spoilers in here, nothing too bad but be advised

There were a few callbacks to Risky's Revenge, such as the scrolling mermaid segment before the finale, but all in all I'd describe it as a mixture of all the Shantae titles...which will be even moreso when Risky comes out with her Pirate's Curse playstyle. I adored the game, and while the overall quality is very comparable, in many ways I found it better than Pirate's Curse--as much as I like pirate gear, this game mastered the transformation mechanic. You can transform on the fly and it's smooth as butter. Considering that's ShaeShae's signature ability, the fact that they've really nailed it down this time is great. I found myself jumping back and forth between 3-4 different forms rapid-fire to pull off some pretty awesome manuevers. The boss fights, imo, were a bit more creative as well (that Ammo Baron fight tho). Of course, The fan service (not that kind) was pretty great, the game felt like a total love letter to the series, it was a real treat. For Shantae fans there were so many great moments that were just awesome-- It had pretty much everything I wanted to see (including that brief-but-epic appearance of you-know-who). But, nothing is perfect, and there is always room for improvement, of course.
Also, the game is unfinished: We still have 4 heroes left to be unlocked.

Maybe I'm biased, but I give it a solid 10/10. I loved it in every way, and I will be playing it for a long time. This is the new standard for Shantae titles, and I hope it does well.

One of the many platforms considered for our girl in the early days was the PC, with ideally a PlayStation port down the line. Here's a pic of the very early demo of the PC/PSX version of Shantae....

Interestingly enough, the game was to use a 3D scenery/2D character artstyle, an idea which was eventually dropped, but later resurfaced in Half-Genie Hero.

Some of you may not know it, but Matt & Erin Bozon, Shantae's creators, developed the Shantae character and universe at roughly the same time as Wario Land 1 was released.
It is not a coincidence that the Shantae and Wario Land series have so much in common.
