Shantae Thread

Thanks for the information man. You must be one of the very few people in the world with a Shantae tattoo, something to be proud of.
I've always wanted a video game tattoo myself, but sadly I can't because of a rare chronic skin disease, and the few places that aren't affected are... rather inconvenient.

Thank you! Yes I'm extremely proud of it. It's one of two video game tattoos I have (3 if you count the time Cristina Vee wrote "Ret-2-Go" on my arm) the other being Meloetta, my fav pokémon.

And I'm really sorry about your condition, man...there's got to be a way, right? I don't know...I want to see you get a tattoo

You seen this? How many guest appearences has she had now? At least 3, as far as I know.

oh boy I've seen it alright. I spent all yesterday losing my shit over it, haha.
Yes, her playable guest appearances are:

-Runbow
-Mutant Mudds
-now this
masterblaster Shant.png
~lookin' good Shae Shae

This, though, is a far more significant appearance as it's not just a skin, but she can actually use dances/transformations, and magic and items from her games, etc. It's a genuine playable Shantae as she should actually play. It's really cool and seeing as how I've never played this, my first experience with this game will be as Shantae so it may as well be a new Shantae game!
I'm so incredibly excited for this, what an awesome time it's been for Shant lately. We've got the awesome-looking Risky Boots DLC coming, the beautiful CharaGumin at AnimeExpo, and now this. Go Shants!

To add to my previous post,
we can expect another moment of greatness in 2018 when Indivisible releases and a certain Shanty appears in that as well. Cristina Vee, the beloved voice of Shantae and all-around awesome person, is the voice director for the game (as she also was for Lab Zero's previous game Skullgirls) as well.

look at this cuteness

Personally, I think every game would be improved 100% by adding Shantae. These guys get it.

Shantae DLC for BlasterMaster Zero came out today 7/6

So of course I grabbed it on my 2DS (don't have a Switch yet, but I'm sure I'll get it on there as well)

master blaster screen.jpg

The first thing I noticed is how faithful she controls to her games.. X is dance, Y is whip, A is magic. Feels like a Shantae game. even if she's not as speedy as she is on her home turf. Transformations are done like Risky's Revenge, i.e. you wait for her to cycle through dance moves until you get the one you want to transform into. What makes this a bit different is the fact that only certain transformations (and magic) are available at certain times. For instance, she can become the monkey on the overworld map to make traversing that a lot easier, but in the smaller sub-levels she's got the elephant and the mutant (a new form based on an enemy from this game) and no monkey. But it works out--given the overhead nature of those sub-levels, the monkey wouldn't be of much use. It's all pretty well designed.

This is all based on about an hour of play, so I have no clue what happens next or what I'm in for. I'll be sure to post updates about it!

Time to play some more BlasterMaster Zero: Starring Shantae

There's in fact another game that has Shantae as a playable character, and even Bolo: an Apple Watch game titled Watch Quest! -Heroes of Time-. However, it appears to be a very obscure game. The Shantae Wiki has very few information about it, and even the official WayForward site provides us only with some basic info and a few screenshots. The few reviews of this game are very mixed.
But it's still cool that this was the first game for that platform.

Not entirely unrelated, there is also a game called Hyper Light Drifter which was planned to feauture Risky Boots, altough only backer-exclusive.

Seems that crossovers are more rule than exception in the indie game industry nowadays. Not that I'm complaining about that. :shantdance:

Ah, I wondered why Risky got the Hyper Light Drifter weapon in HGH..

Watch Quest....funny thing, I actually have this game. Unfortunately, in order to get it to work, you need it downloaded on both your phone and your watch, and I...don't have an Apple Watch.

Strangely enough, Bolo appears to be the main character in this.

And surprising absolutely no one, Shantae looks way cooler.

I'm sure I'll grab an Apple Watch one of these days and do some *proper* coverage of this game, but until then these images and our imaginations will have to suffice.

Here are two fun little facts that I wanted to post some time ago, but I kept forgetting to post it, so I will do it now before I forget it yet again:
  • The name Shantae is of French origin adapted to English spelling. It is explained on the Shantae Wiki that she was named after someone Matt's wife Erin Bozon met on a summer camp. (or something like that; the story is quite vague) This would place Shantae in the same list as Mario and Kirby of video game characters named after people.
  • There used to be a funny mistranslation in the Dutch introduction text to the first game on the 3DS eShop where Shantae was referred to as being a half-ghost. However it appeared to have been changed to the more correct word djinn by now.
I must say, a ghost ability for Shantae would be absolutely awesome. She can already transform into a vase and a tree, and there are gost enemies in HGH so it's not that far-fetched.

A ghost dance/transformation would be amazing. And there's so much you could do with it! Pass through solid objects, possess enemies, scare the shit out of enemies, etc.
and you just know Ghost Shantae would look awesome as hell.

But as far as creepy forms go, I'm still carrying a torch for my personal favorite transformation, that sadly never made it into the final game, the awesome Succubus form:

succubus form.png

What a great design! Words cannot describe how much I love this.

I'm super optimistic about the future of it, too, because even though the form itself didn't make it, the Half-Genie Hero art gallery features several different pieces of fanart depicting it. It has it's fans and WF knows that. We shall see!

This video has been in my recommended for a looong time since I'm not a Gaijin Goombah fan anymore but I decided to watch it anyway and I can tell you: I have never seen such BS in a Gaijin Goombah video.
Sorry if I insulted any Gaijin Goombah fans around here but this video is outright ridiculous. Granted, some things weren't that crazy, but my overall feelings about this from about 1:15 onward is sweetjesus:seriously?:.
He tries to make statements that make The Game Theorists sound plausible in comparison. I have been in Turkey myself and much of the architecture doesn't look at all like that of Sequin Land, which is clearly meant to represent Arabian architecture. The thing about the bathouses is maybe the only in this video that isn't total bullshit.

However there are certainly elements from outside Arabian culture in Shantae's world. For example, Sequin Land Palace looks like it was designed after the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, and Bandit Town looks a bit like a medieval town.

Yeah, I've watched this before, and I gotta say I don't really agree with this guy. Sure there are influences, mostly in her dancing style, but not as much to conclusively say "lol 100% Turkish". (yeah, that title makes him look like a total asshat)
But at the end of the day, Sequin Land is Sequin Land, it's not some surrogate for a real-life country. It's just Sequin Land.

Viva la Sequin Land

Sometimes it feels as if that Gaijin Goombah is just a troll who likes to spark controversy. But honestly, he failed at even that. I expected a video like that to have a massive amount of dislikes, but appearently it's just good enough for most people to don't have a considerable dislike-like ratio.
Ironically, when I clicked that video I was thinking ¨Hm, he made a Shantae video. Maybe I should start following him again.¨ and barely a minute later I was like ¨Or maybe not.¨

Note how in this artwork Shantae wears her Risky's Revenge outfit and Sky flies on Wrench, something that wasn't seen in the games until Half-Genie Hero. (But it actually came from a cancelled GBA demo.)

Yup good eye, you're the only other person I've seen point this out. I think it's pretty neat-- it was for her cover of Nintendo Power (second-to-last issue ever) which highlighted Pirate's Curse. NP was always very supportive of Shantae, much more than any other form of media at the time, print or otherwise. RIP Nintendo Power, if it wasn't your them I'd have never known about Shantae (or at least how amazing it is).

In other news regarding all things Shant, it was revealed at Comic Con recently that an art book featuring the glorious artwork of all four games is slated for a 2018 release. The artwork is one of the series' most defining traits--every game has such a distinct, expressive style. Couldn't be happier to hear...between this, her Charagumin, and everything else going for her, it looks like our little Shae is finally finding her place in the sun. d:rolleyes:
