The Mega Man series

A press release concerning the new cartoon has popped up, a couple of days ago :

I do recognize the artstyle as being similar to ehat little I have seen in passing from MoA's previous projects, though I don't know what it is about it, but Mega Man's face looks incredibly off to me.

Not a whole lot else to say, we won't see it this year and there is another confirmed character, who we only know by name, as of now.

The whole ''Mega Man as a secret identity'' plot point continues to bring Star Force to my mind, makes me wish that SF got another shot at an anime adaption again, I would have rather seen that, to be honest.

It's giving me Dreamwave vibes, since the Dreamwave comics also did that.

And yeah, I need to see the Star Force anime one of these days. Probably better than this. Does the Star Force anime have a DVD release? Can't remember.

I know that the UK had at least one DVD release, not sure how much that one covered and truth to be told, apart from one dubbed episode I pretty much stuck with subs all the way, mainly because not the entire series was dubbed.

Personally I liked the anime, there tend to be very mixed opinions on it, especially due to alterations to the characters that noticably simplified them from their game selves. I'd be lying if I said I didn't see it myself, however I also feel that it was a neccessary evil due to external cirumstances.

You see, the show was stuck in a time slot that forced episodes to be only 10 minutes long each, including the opening and recaps, so with so little time and story progression, character exploration and action scenes all wrestling for screentime it's not surprising that things needed to be streamlined.

Granted there are some things that I do miss from the games, for instance Geo lacks the character arc that he goes throught the games, with his depressed and anti-social state from SF1 being completely absent and downplayed respectively, with that said the anime's take of him is very lovable in it's own right and while I find it to be a shame that the changes to Sonia's backstory take away a lot of what made her bond with Geo in the games so meaningful and touching, I still think her character was handled wonderfully, with the higher emphasis on her headstrong qualities and her being more of a wild girl, in a way that really works, I can easily see her game self develop into that direction over time.

Truth to be told I think the Star Force anime did the best it could with the format it had to work with, I might be bummed out by some of the ommisions as well, but I'd rather have them take a direction that's different, but works, then force the premise and characters of an RPG series 1 to 1 into a format where they have no room to breath and would likely end up falling on it's face.

I looked up the DVD just now...for some reason, the fact that Manga Entertainment released the UK DVD set amuses me.

But aside from that, the DVD set seems to cover the entire dubbed run...though it's like you said, the dub itself doesn't cover the entire series.

I'm now debating whether or not to snag a region-free DVD player.

I should look more into the dub myself at some point, especially since I'm curious how they handled a number of things, like Sonia's songs.

Speaking of music :

I love this friggin' theme song.

Well, it'a been a while since I did one of my (in?)famous posts talking about something I really like, so here's one for a series that I have been outright spamming my Tumblr blog with for the entire month now:

Yup, Mega Man Star Force, I figured it would be appropriate too, since the series will have it's 10th anniversary in Europe in November, thing is the 30th anniversary of the franchise at large is only a month later, so I'll take some time to talk about Star Force now.

The EXE timeline of Mega Man is something that I'd actually wouldn't get into until 2015, when I finally gave the Battle Network series a shot, via the Wii U Virtual Console and I'll make sure to say more about that series another time, I will say that I enjoyed it quite a bit, motivating me even more to give Star Force a shot.

I actually found the first game (Dragon Version) at complete random at a Game Stop, while I was still in the middle of the BN series, I picked it up and not gonna lie, I wasn't sure what to expect, with Battle Network I at least had seen a decent amount of NT Warriors beforehand and the whole reimagined classic series approach also helped, but Star Force was almost completely uncharted territory for me.

Nedless to say, the surprise I had was all the more pleasent, gameplaywise I really got a kick out of the more reflex based battle mechanics, which while not as deep as BN's battle system, really give the battles a flair on it's own, the music is fantastic and the world futuristic, while still relatable.

The thing that I loved the most though were the story and characters, I can't think of a single character that didn't stick with me in some way, Omega has a very intruiging character arc, many good lines and a great dynamic with Geo, Pat is incredibly interesting with his depressing background and Rey and I even ended up really liking Luna, despite me usually being a bit meh on the tsundere archtype.

The characters that stuck out for me the most are Sonia and Geo, both individually and in their relationship, which I gotta say, in combination with the general theme of the series (bonds and relationships) hit very close to home for me, in terms of personal experiences, sure there are some slight ''powah of friendship'' vibes here and there, but the game really does manage to be surprisingly smart in how it handles the theme and dilemmas of the characters in away that's relatable and understandable.

Geo in particular I have to say is very notable, we already had a Mega Man that was reluctand to fight in the form of X, but X is also a warrior who is married to his job, Geo on the other hand is just a boy who had his father taken away from him, causing him to spiral into a depressed and reclusive state, that he needs to dig himself out of. His fears, insecurities and general feeling of just wanting to be left alone in the beginning are very human and natural, which is exactly what makes it so wonderful when he finally finds someone he feels he can open up towards, in the form of Sonia or when he eventually does away with his reluctance and becomes a willing fighter. He is just a kid that you really want to see succeed and it's always satisfying when he does.

I know that the second game is considered medicore by most, but I liked it more then most. I agree that the writing was a step down from the first game, with some odd wackyness that doesn't gel that well with the first game's atmosphere, not to mention the obnoxiously ramped up encounter rate and some questionable gimmicks, especially in the final area with those horrendously laggy touch controls, but I still got plenty of enjoyment from it, despite my problems with it.

With that said, despite me thinking that the second game was alright, I also thought that the third game was a much bigger step up, characters are handled better again (though the mains weren't too bad in two), especially Hyde and Solo who I didn't mind in the their debut in the second game, but felt that the third and the anime did a better job with, plus some very cool new characters, like Ace. The story has more relevance to the main plot again and I love the additions to the battle system in the form of support cards, noise forms and the return of Program Advance, they really added a new layer of freedom of what type of fighting style you want to go for. Overall a great finale to the series.

I already said my piece about the anime beforehand, I think it's fun.

In the end all I can say is that Star Force is a series that I'm very happy to have experieced, it may not be the biggest or most popular of Mega Man sub series, but it's one that I have a very special soft spot for, that can't be replaced.

With that I'll leave you with a gorgeous remix of the series' main theme:

I don't really use it all that much on bosses, but I like to fool around with it in levels, just to get the most out of it.

Also maybe it's just me, but I always love official artworks like these:

for showing the many different series together, there is just something very nice to see them unified like that, plus, it's a nice bit of fanservice for the series that are either concluded (Zero, Star Force) or seemingly abandoned (Legends, ZX).

I understand the idea, Kinda have to try to get the most out of it since its really only great to get a few E tanks and then just gathers dust next to your better weapons.

Acknowledgeding Legends or ZX just makes me want them more, The art is great nontheless. But never forget.

Lovin' the 3rd picture with Roll.

Oh, my craving for Legends and ZX to come back will never end either, especially ZX since that series get's so little attention, even in crossover stuff.

I'd actually really like to see Battle Network and Star Force continue as well, I mean Lan, Hub, Geo and Mega are all still alive and kicking and not only can BN still work without Wily (and the epilogue in BN6 can just take place after any future installment), but Rockman.EXE Operate Shooting Star even straight up shows that Geo can still have adventures post the events of SF3.

Oh yeah definitely, its a shame that the likely dead classic MegaMan gets the most attention when its the least story intensive, hell we've known how it would lead into the X series for years it was just a matter of watching it play off. and like you said Geo gets to have adventures and that side of the franchise would actually need a conclusion, it is more story intensive and we have no idea whats to come. Same applies to Legends and ZX, especially Legends.

It's a damn shame indeed, I mean there is still so much thst could be that with BN and SF, like SF2 does establish that Lan conceptualised what would become the Brother Band, so it would be interesting to see a bit of build up to that in future BN games and SF, despite trying to be conclusive, still has a number of loose ends that could use to be tied up.

The main timeline as you said, also still has plenty of cleaning up to do and while Legends and ZX are the biggest examples, it particulary bothers me how we know nothing about Axl's fate. What's going on with him after X8, is Lumine really inside him now? Was he still alive during the Elf Wars and does he have a connection to Model A after all, despite the things Master Albert said? While it's understandable that the Zero series didn't bring mention to him, since it it was already in full motion by the time Axl was introduced, it did feel like ZX Advent was trying to at least provide a possible answer, that never got a follow-up.

Well i guess all we have is our own speculations for the time being. While i appreciated ZX's effort i don't think it ultimately makes any difference unless it goes on but will be pointless if if the X series wraps tht thread up. and if ZX comes first then we will all have spoiled on what happens and in my opinion i would rather play through that part of the lore but like i said it ain't happening so speculation it is.

As for the Lan thing i would love to see how his idea would morph into the Brother Band. Its ripe for potential story lines that could feel natural AND subvert expectations, I would be disappointed if its just "I've got something its now Brother Band!" Too me it feels like after being dormant for so long they would likely take the easy way out as to not confuse fans or something, Though i may as well be wrong and should just trust the devs.

The rumors were true:

I'm very happy for this, it's great to see 7 and 8 get some love for once, not to mention 9 and 10 getting a new release, though it would have been nice to see Mega Man & Bass on there as well.

Also, Bass being mentioned during the MM10 section means they are including the DLC as well (as they should), I hope that means they also add stuff like the Saturn exclusive content from MM8 as well or make both songs for Tengu Man's stage available options.
