the Orbulon Thread

Everyone else loves Wario, Mona, 9-Volt, or Ashley, while I'm not easy to find because I'm an

I don't understand this whole fad lately that Orbulon is some kind of... sugar-sweet cuteypie? He was one of the most arrogant characters in the series! I mean, constantly belittling the player's IQ, calling you inferior, trying to conquer Earth (or "save it" as he later called it), and calling other characters his "underlings"... that's not cute.
My best friend in high school could not stand the little creep! Heheh. Even so, I always enjoyed his antics. He was a fun character, but definitely no sweetheart.

Even the space bunnies wanted nothing to do with him after he sent them a distress call - though he later 'recruited' a few to run his ship and give him backrubs. Thankfully, he doesn't usually take his shades off. He looks more menacing without them on, I reckon...

From what I can see, this characterization is mostly confined to the Western localization, & I agree that it's not as endearing. In the original Japanese, he's nearly a different character. Where his comic value in the West derives from an arrogant personality coupled with karma-inspired chaotic mishaps, the Japanese comic value seems to derive from being repeatedly put into life-threatening situations, despite being so awkward & mild-mannered... almost like an alien version of Neville Longbottom.

I prefer the JP characterization by miles, but from a marketing perspective, I guess I understand why the localization team would think the louder, Invader-ZIM-like personality would appeal more to Western audiences.

@Magma Thank you for providing these fantastic screencaps!!
The text here appears to say: "Huh? Seriously? I can't believe you cleared [my stage]!" ("え?マジですか?クリアだなんて信じられない!”)
So that trademark arrogance is still there... That does shed some light on why his insecurity about looking unintelligent in front of the "Earthlings" is so overplayed in his diaries.

EDIT: Similarly, this second screencap appears to say, "Let's make you my underling!" ("君たちを子分にしてあげよう!") a la Dribble & Spitz in MPG. d:D

(Also @Magma please share where you're getting these screencaps!!! These are such good quality & I desire more.....)
