What would you do with Warioware?

Make a good game that returns to the principles the post Smooth Moves-entries missed: pick up and play with frantic pace and minimal interruptions, replayability through having a large variety of unlockable Stuff.

Look at reviews of the WW games (professional or user): you'll see people praise the quick, frantic pace, the creativity, the replayability through carrots like unlockable minigames and toys, and the anarchic spirit conveyed by the microgame's visuals and humour. What you will *not* see is extended praise for the slow, boring cutscenes or the puddle-deep character archetypes.

I distinctly remember my sister replaying Touched!, only to walk up to me and say "Bro, the cinemas in this game are long and boring". Rhythm Heaven Megamix is another quirky minigame compilation that added an "in-depth" plot to a series that had none before: nobody liked it and every comers condemned the inclusion of this grotesque and inexplicable pace-killer to what had been a pick-up and play series. If you're actually in the business of making a game that will sell well and be liked by the target audience of the previous games and not just internet fanboys, "focusing on the plot and characters" as suggested by nearly every posts in this thread is a bad idea.

Amazing. I let a high school friend try out the original WarioWare way back in 2004 (before any sequels had been made) and he couldn't get enough of the random frantic pace. He only had one complaint... He hated having to sit through the cut-scenes. They meant nothing to him, and he felt bored with their lack of purpose or substance.

I gotta say, Glowsquid sure brought an interesting and fresh take on this topic. I've been way too caught up on the "character" of the series that I totally forgot all about the actual gameplay. It's certainly fresher than saying that Ashley should have more prominence.

Kyon, mind 'splaining how my message is "old"?

Another thing I realized after making my previous message is that Game & Wario already did most of what you guys are requesting: It had games "more" themed around the characters hosting them (not all of them, but still more), it had snapier and higher production-value cutscenes, it had an entire set of toy capsules dedicated to "expanding the lores of WarioWare" and elaborating on the relationships between the characters, etc. Nobody cared.

the primary problem with Game & Wario is not the longer games or the character interaction

I didn't say that.

it didn't have the charm of Warioware, it didn't have the feel of Warioware, it was just not Warioware.

And that was the point I'm making. You could make the WarioWare game with the deepest lores and the Best characters, but nobody care if the game they surround is boring. It's frosting, not the cake.

And tell me, why can't we have interesting characters and relationships?

You can. My post took the blunt-as-an-hammer tone it did because I honestly couldn't tell if people are posting their wishlist or if they honestly think the remedy WarioWare needs to be a successful game franchise is longer cutscenes, story mode interrupting the minigames and the divine revujenating touch of Waluigi.

Look at Sonic for example, one of the sole reasons for his popularity is his personality and how interesting of a character he was compared to Mario.

Considering the mockery and scorn the Sonic's franchise bizarre plot developments endured from publications and lapsed fans, as well the obvious struggle Sonic Team had with making an "epic" and "serious" storyline about a blue, sneakers-wearing hedgehog jumping on a fat guy, I don't think it's the best example to cite honestly.

Edit: welp, the post I was responding to dissapeared, but I'm going to leave this as i because it clarifies my stance.

Sorry, misinterpeted that.

The whole point of this thread is just a fun little idea on what would you do if you owned the Warioware IP. (Plus i'll admit that some people did probably take a bit more seriously then it should have been.) and honestly besides Kyon & PJ, i don't recall any posts wanting a story mode ala Megamix, just more interesting characters and interactions. (And as we all know, the holy touch of Waluigi will always make a game 100x better. :p)

Sonic has always had a deeper lore then the games suggested, Even in the classic games where "There is no story" look at the japanese manuals someday if you haven't, and there's many things that you wouldn't know. (Like how in Sonic 3's story, there was a series of unusually high tides and how a mysterious ring washed up on westside, and how it tells the legend of the floating island and that combined with something that Tails' built (Don't remember what?) is what prompts Sonic & Tails to head off to Angel Island.) and the reason why Sonic has gotten such a beating is for many many reasons even beyond the story. and now even the Modern games are now starting to get scorn from fans and critics now, because of the lack of story and cheesy writing. (That was one of the biggest criticisms with Lost World was the lack of character interactions and story.) and one of the Sonic Boom cartoon's biggest praises was the character interactions. (Even if it wasn't a action packed cartoon like we all have wanted.) Plus Sonic is basically a critic's punching bag at this point, they're able to find things in Generations & Colors (Which are said to be the best Sonic games in awhile.) that are nitpicky at best and make them out like they completely ruin the game forever. basically anything Sonic related to them is bad, no matter how good the product actually is. hell some critics are saying that Sonic has always sucked, or how he should had been left behind in the 90s, and yes Unleashed & Black Knight, shows that you can have a good and epic storyline with a blue hedgehog who jumps on robots. (Though you're right in that he wasn't the best example for this, and this is coming from a guy that actually likes Black Knight soooooo....)

So just to get this back on track, after my massive derailing, (God I feel embarrassed by that.) i'm gonna go with glowsquid and add ideas about what would I do with the gameplay itself.

  • Make the Wario watch stage from Twisted a core aspect of the series. - Seriously this stage was fun and The idea of there being a timer ticking down and you have to complete mircogames to increase it adds a whole new level of challenge to an already challenging game IMO.
  • Bring back the themes and change it up every now and then. - I get that Warioware was meant to showcase the system's capabilities and gimmicks, but you can make the argument that all of Nintendo's IPs are meant to showcase the system in one way or another, from power to gimmickal, but I felt that Warioware puts too much emphasis on them. So let's bring back the themes, and hell let's switch them every now and then, just so people won't get bored with the same themes over and over again.
  • Have a cafe mode. - I really like this feature in Rhythm Heaven, where you can basically take a break from the action and you can just chill out, talk to some of the characters there, and look at fun and interesting stuff, Including little aspects about the characters and the world they live in. So this would be nice to see something like this in Warioware, where if things got too frustrating, you can just go to the cafe and chill out.
So these are some of my ideas regarding the gameplay and what I would do with it if I owned Warioware. Of course there's more, but i'll save those for a later time.

Yeah, looking back on my posts I think I was mainly just waning to give Ashley a small backstory, nothing too awfuly deep like I said, I added Young Cricket so it didn't feel like I was only talking about Ashley.

Other than that, I just want Ashley to have a tiny story, the rest of the characters could...I dunno, do what they usually do.

Ashley getting some backstory is actually quite a good idea. She has some interesting questions unanswered, How old is she really? Where are her parents? And what kind of species is Red?

These questions could be asked about pretty much everyone of them.
The only characters where we know their age are Orbulon and Dr.Crygor.
And the only Characters where we know their family are Jimmy and 9-Volt.
I would like to see a more detailed ID card for every character like in Mega Party game but with more detail.

The question that interest me the most is how much bribe Wario gives to the officials for ignoring that he lets children and toddlers work for him.

They live in a world where Babies drive in a deadly go-karting race, and can be blown up and smacked around with items, fall into lava, freezing water, etc. That's all fine in the Mario world, kids under 13 working isn't a big deal.

Of course I want the other characters have more backstory as well, but it's just those questions about Ashley that make me wonder. Why does a young girl live in a big haunted mansion without any family and only a little red crature as company?

You could really do that with any character considering the limited development and make it sound interesting.

What was Crygor like before he augmented himself? How old is he really? What is his real relationship with Penny?
