How soft is it to hardmod an xbox?

Aw, darn : ( I got Phantasy Star Online for it, but I need to softmod it in order to use a patch to play the game, since I can obviously no longer make a gamertag. People online seem to say its easy, but it sounds like its hard to do, but I dont really know cuz Ive never tried to do anything like it before : p
Wish I knew someone who still had a gamertag, so that I could just use a memory card and save it to my xbox : p
