It's a nice thought, but I have my doubts. Big City (or "Big Ape City" in full) is pretty darn obscure, considering it only ever appeared in two GB games, both released in the early days of the Super GB.

I always loved how Big City was the first world in DK94, and the final world in DKL. My favourite location in the whole DK series, along with Kremlantis.

Maybe it's because Mario and Luigi were portrayed as Italian Americans from Brooklyn in the early games, and also in the cartoons.

Considering the City is filled to the brim with references to both the DKC games and the original arcade game and it's implied heavily to be the setting of the original DK game (And possibly DK94), it's very possible that New Donk City is one big (Intentional or not.) homage to Big City/Big Ape City and I don't think it's illogical that they're even the same city (As for the Big Ape City name, It can simply be chalked up as a nickname for the city just like how New York is oftentimes called The Big Apple for example.)
