Do people underestimate the popularity of the Wario series?

Because if you ask Nintendo fans how popular the series is, you'll generally get answers that suggest its some third rate series selling worse than Advance Wars and F-Zero.

However, that's actually not the case. For instance, do you know well the worst Wario Land games sold?

No? Well, Wario Land 2 and Shake It were the worst selling, and they sold more than a million copies. That's about as well as Metroid Prime 2 and Hunters, as well as significantly better than any Fire Emblem title prior to the 3DS era.

Decently selling Wario Land games (and a fair few WarioWare titles) have broke the 2 million mark, which puts them ahead of all but 2 Star Fox games and every Metroid title barring the original NES game and Prime.

And the original game? Well, that sold a fantastic 5.2 million copies worldwide. For comparison sakes, that blows many Zelda games (like the Wind Waker and Skyward Sword) out of the water and nearly matches what Super Mario Sunshine sold on the Gamecube.

So no. The Wario series isn't 'obscure' and it doesn't sell poorly either. It's actually a system seller on par with at least Nintendo's second tier titles, and can even threaten the likes of Zelda, Donkey Kong or Mario in certain situations.

Kind of like Donkey Kong itself really. Again, people really like to look down on the games and say they're 'lesser' than Mario or the likes, yet the original Donkey Kong Country outsold every game in the Legend of Zelda series and beats Metroid so tidily that it could almost be seen as business suicide for Retro to be working on a Metroid Prime game instead of a Donkey Kong Country one.

But what do you think? Do people generally underestimate how popular the Wario series actually is?

Wario is the ultimate sleeper hit

In term of raw sales and critical acclaim, yeah I guess.

Unlike Donkey Kong Country though, I don't think the wario brand has massive appeal with lapsed and mainstream players.

Yes, the Wario series is more successfull that is often thought, But I have to say, Wario isn't as popular as he was in the GameBoy/Gameboy Color era anymore, especially when it comes to the Land games. But I was actually surprised at how some Wario titles outsold other good and popular games.

While the Wario series sells decently, I don't think it has much of a fan following compared to even Star Fox.

I said this once on the DKVine. Sales =/= fandom. A lot of the sales from Wario come from people who like the games and will buy them, but aren't dedicated fans.

Dedicated fans who buy the merch and are eager for the next title in the series. The Wario fandom is relatively small and a lot of it blurs with the Mario fandom.

To be fair, you could argue that Star Fox and F-Zero and the likes don't have that much of a fandom given their sales. Their major forums are generally about as active as this one, despite being around far longer and having lots more posts.

Well I'm not comparing F-Zero to Wario. At this point Wario has a bigger fandom than F-Zero. But I wonder about Star Fox.
