Sprites for Virtual Boy Wario Land

@Juan "Shantae" Schwartz requested that I rip all the sprites for this particular enemy, so here we go! This is also my first sprite sheet for Virtual Boy Wario Land. As the internet is currently quite void of any VBWL sprite sheets, I'd like to try and gradually put them all together for the Spriters Resource. It's a tedious process, so new sheets may be far in-between. But watch this space for updates!

Hey, that's pretty cool. Nice to see some rip some Virtual Boy Wario Land sprites, especially given as few have been ripped before.

That said, don't forget to submit them to Mario Fan Games Galaxy as well. Spriter's Resource isn't the only place people look for Wario sprites now.

Much appreciated. I ripped one sprite (Wario when falling down the hole in the opening cutscene) during my search for unused content, however, I'm not all that knowledgeable on how to properly rip the tiles and all of that mumbo jumbo. As such, this is a massive help to me and the rest of the community to finally have these sprites out there.

By the by, since Wario's sprites are layered, how does one go about ripping that onto a sprite sheet properly? Simply rearrange them into the animations as seen in-game, or is there an alternate method?

Anyhow, thanks again for ripping these. Very much appreciated.

I don't even remember this enemy.

Yeah, it would be cool if we could have more VBWL sprite sheets out there. At least all the main Wario Sprites and the most common enemies.

So, is this project still ongoing? Cause as said, it'd be nice to have all of Wario's sprites and the most common enemy sprites available for this game...

Hi! Yes, this is still on the books. As well as the audio samples project. But I can't commit a lot of time and energy until my uni break in late June.

That's cute!

I've got one new sprite sheet pending approval at the Spriter's Resource, and I plan to get two more done by the end of the week. I'll post all three together when they're done!

What's your process for ripping these sprites? Are you extracting the game's tiles from the ROM and then arranging them or are you using screencaps?
Hi there! I tried working on extracting the game tiles late last year, but like ShyGuyXXL, I also had a lot of trouble arranging the sprites properly without having to use screenshots to piece them together accurately.

My preferred method is examining the sprite and background layers, and extracting the sprite movement frame-by-frame.

The difficult part about extracting sprites from screenshots is knowing which pixels belong to the sprites and which belong to the background if they have the same colors and it's not immediately obvious.
I've noticed that while comparing the Catbat sprite sheet on spriters resouce to the actual tilesheet from the game. In a lot of cases the ripper took some liberties with Catbat's outlines, adding pixels where they don't belong... ...which just bugs me...
If I ever upload a sprite sheet I want it to be as accurate as humanly possible. If even one pixel was off I'd kick myself. :STongue:

Oh no, I don't believe in taking the sprites directly from the screenshots either. That would be very difficult for VBWL, as dark backgrounds are often indistinguishable from the sprite outlines.

In the emulator I use, the moving sprites and background layers are shown and can be saved as separate images. This can sometimes show parts of a sprite which are unseen or cut off during normal gameplay. And be assurred that I am very meticulous for accuracy.

Here's a comparison between the Spriters Resource sprite of Catbat and one that I pieced together using all the seperate tiles from the game's files.
As you can see they just took a screenshot, removed the background and UI and then tried to clean it up, which might look cleaner in some places but it's not accurate at all.

I think if a sprite is faulty or messy in the original game then it should stay that way when ripped.
