Video game endings

We all like a nice and satisfying ending to our video games, don't we?

There are many ways the storyline in a video game can conclude. You have the happy ending that we see in almost all Mario games, bittersweet endings that are both happy and tragic, and sad endings where the ending isn't happy at all. Special mention goes to endings where the protagonist dies or where it is revealed that the entire game didn't take place and was not real.

Some endings are real tearjerkers, others are just so sweet and heartwarming that you can't help but tear up a bit. And some endings are just strange, or leave you with more questions than answers.

And then you have these ¨thank you for playing¨ [credits] endings.

I have seen alot of different endings to games, and I will list a few of my favourite below.

I've seen Peach kissing Mario many times, but it never really touched me. But in this game it did.
The credits music sounds so triumphant and gives you that ¨the andventure is finally over¨ feeling.
How they show all the enemy's names is also a nice touch.

For such a funny and wacky series the game's endings always manage to touch me and this one in particular was really heartwarming.

Like with the Shantae games, Wario Land 4's multiple endings are kinda unexpectedly sweet and poignant. It is the only time we see Princess Shokora as her true self and also amusing to watch with Wario reflecting his memories of the past when he was young while driving back home with his treasure.

If there is an ending that you really like and want to share, feel free. But try not to spoil too much, okay?

The ending to Skies of Arcadia is pretty great, for this reason alone-

I also really liked the ending to Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean for Gamecube. Im not gonna post a video, cuz its about a ten minute long video. But its really nice seeing the purpose of Xehlas journey, and seeing Kalas finally telling her that he loves her and all that. It was a really nice ending.

The game also does a good job with making the player a character in the game, with you being Kalas' guardian spirit who interacts with the characters, and during the final scene of the game, the party says their final goodbyes to you, its a really nice ending : p

The ending to Arc Rise Fantasia is really awesome too. The main character has to put himself in some kind of suspended animation for 1.000 years in order for the world to be saved, meaning he has to leave all his friends. When he wakes up, he finds a video where all his friends tell him goodbye, and that they love him and all that. But he notices that the female lead character wasnt in the video. He was upset because before he went into his slumber, she ran away in anger. So he believes she forgot about him.
But he turns and finds her there waiting for him, because she went and did the same thing in order to be there when he wakes up. I got kinda tear-y eyed by that, haha.

I like that kind of mushy stuff : p

Best ending to a video game has to be the Japanese version of Karnov. You're literally a fat Mongolian bald man who flies and spits fire at demons and dinosaurs. At the end of the game you become Jesus Christ and defeat Satan, Jesus = fat Mongolian bald man.

I've always liked Super Mario 64's ending. Love the music, general atmosphere and how it revisits all the game's levels to show the results of your efforts:

Wario Land 2 and 3's endings are pretty nice too:

(Though for 2, the tons of different endings helps significantly, with the above being only one of about ten).

As is the one at the end of Donkey Kong Country 2:

I think its interesting that Breath of the Wild is the best Zelda game but had probably the worst ending in the series.

I have a sneaking suspicion a lot of stuff was cut or simplified to focus on polishing up the world and mechanics. The latter are so complex (and massive) than it almost feels like they didn't really have time (or the inclination) for much of a 'deep' story when it was all set up and ready. Just like how after implementing all their complex AI, weapons system, durability, etc, they didn't really get round to adding many 'unique' enemies into the formula.

But hey, it's probable all this will improve with a sequel. When the hard work is already done, that leaves plenty of room for Nintendo to work on the more story/enemy/character related aspects instead.

Let's hope. Who knows, the music was purposely made simple and bland. Perhaps the rest was done like that too. If so, then maybe they don't think those things are needed and won't bother to add them in the next game either.

Yeah, so much focus on all those robot things in BotW prevented there from being other kinds of enemies.

And this is coming from a guy who rarely to never has any complaints about Zelda games. Even if I do have any, they're fairly minor.
