What you see is what you get, just a guy...
So this year is the 25th anniversary of Wario, and i figured to kickstart this wonderous year of garlic and wah, i figured let's look at the various versions of Wario, and talk about our favorite versions of him, now like a lot of Nintendo characters, Wario has went through several variations ever since he first debuted 25 years ago. let's look at them shall we.

Early Wario - (SML2, Mario vs Wario, Wario's Woods ETC)
This is the earilest incarination of our favorite anti hero, first debuting in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins, this Wario was quite a different person compared to our favorite anti hero of today, in fact he was not even a anti hero, as back then we was a straight up villain. who took over lands, and was the main antagionist in quite a few Mario games back in the day, as you can tell, there were quite a few differences compared to the Wario we know today, with the googly eyes being the most notable feature.

Yokoi Wario (Wario Land 1, VB Wario Land)
WARIOLOANDWARIO.PNG

I'm sure a lot of people reconigizes this Wario, now at this point, he is starting to resemble the Wario we know and love, but there are some minor differences betwen this Wario and Modern Wario, and it's obivous by the Hat and the longer sleves, but it was not just those either, as his games share a lot of more elements with the Super Mario series then it does now, like Power Ups, Pipes, Question Blocks, The big to small damage system, and many more Mario like elements (Hell Mario even appeared in Wario Land 1's ending.) now while this Wario is definitely more similer to today's Wario, he was still trying to find his place in the world which he did in
Wario Land Wario. aka the One & Only (Every Wario Land game post VBWL.)
564px-Wario_Pose.jpg

This is the one, the one everyone loves and adores, the egotistical and greedy but very comedic and fun treasure hunter and classic, Wario. This version of him debuted in Wario Land 2, and has become the standard and fan favorite Wario since then, from the hilarious transformations to his iconic shoulder bash to his overall personality, Wario has finally found his place in the gaming world, finally becoming seperated from Mario, and has gained fans from all over the world because of it.

But things soon changed in 2003 thanks to a little GBA game known as
Warioware Wario (Warioware.)
Wario_ware_cheats_art.gif

Aka known as Biker Wario by some. this Wario completely shattered the fandom when it was first revealed, and so did his overall personality, This wario was more comedic in nature then the treasure hunter we know and love, and a lot of people tend to hate this version of Wario for killing off WL Wario, but there are some key points, for one his outfit. This outfit was the moment Wario became completely seperated from Mario overall and becoming his own thing in the process for better or for worst. and come on, his motorcycle is pretty sweet.

Now let's look at the other Wario's

Super Mario Wario (Every Mario Game starring him.)
689px-Warioloafing.png

This Wario is the one everyone knows, from general audiences to fans, when people think of Wario, this is what comes to mind, the friendly but mischievous and definitely comedic rival to Mario, starting with Mario Kart 64, he has appeared in practically every sports and party game imaginable. and has even become a full out playable character in Super Mario 64 DS. man what a guy, now this Wario was pretty different from Wario Land Wario, as like Warioware Wario, they focused on his more comedic aspects rather then his badass or cool aspects, and his rivalry with Mario was also focused on more, for obivous reasons. okay let's get to it already

Super Wario aka UGH!!! (Super Smash Bros.)
600px-Wario_SSB4_Artwork.jpg

Now at first glance, this doesn't look too bad at first glance. but watch the Smash Brothers Brawl trailer and you'll understand everything,

What....The....Fuck? That my friends is Smash Wario, or as i like to call him, fake Wario. Now don't get me wrong i like Sakurai and he has made some truly great games, (Kid Icarus Uprising has become one of my top 3 3DS games.) but seriously he took away pretty much all his charm and fun and made him some disgusting farting eating machine, hell Smash 4 took it a bit futher, and removed his SHOULDER BASH!!!!! which is oh i don't know, HIS MOST ICONIC MOVE. seriously now, this is a insult to Wario and his character and representation (Seriously where's the Wario Land love?) and it's sad that a bunch of fans did it better then Sakurai could.
(Project M anyone???)

Adventures Wario (The Mario vs Wario comics.)
Marioversuswario.jpg

Oh boy didn't expect this Wario did you, now this was a eariler version of Wario, but despite him appearing before Wario Land, many traits of his begun here, like his pride and his backstory, now unlike the Wario from the games, this version of him was a bit nicer, and aside from his envy and jealousy towards Mario, he doesn't really have any real bad traits. (Though i never read the Super Mario Adventures comics, so i wouldn't know.)

Commerical Wario
SML26GCCMWario2.png

Oh yes, Obey Me Wario, Destroy Mario, this version of Wario was very common back in the 90s, as he appeared in many commericals for his eariler games, what makes this version of Wario different from the rest, is that he is pure evil, from using mind control to hypotize people, to intending to not just defeat Mario, but to destroy him as well, also his overall expressions are much more evil in nature then the goofy expressions that he has today.

So these are all the notable variations on Wario, now of course there are many more variations that i didn't talk about, so if you have a favorite variation that's not on here, and then go ahead and list it. but now let's get to the question...

Who's your favorite version of Wario?

Of course, at the end of the day The One and Only is the purest form of our (anti)hero, but I will always be extremely fond of Yokoi Wario. He's that interesting half-way point between the wild-eyed SML2 villain and the main man we know today. He was the version that introduced us to Wario's bizarre adventures in avarice, and the version that showed us Wario was more than some crazy doppelganger - he was a force to be reckoned with, and a damn cool dude. Not to mention Yokoi's work on the Wario series was some of the best in the series.

Honorable mention to SML2 Wario, this is what started it all and I'll always have a soft spot for it. (a tattoo, to be exact.):shantdance2:

Wario Land Wario naturally. I don't mind WarioWare Wario or even Super Mario Wario but also quite naturally hate the hybrid mutation they spawned in Smash Wario.

How can you draw a difference between villain Wario and the first two Wario Land games? They all released during the same period (1993-1995) when Wario was marked a villain. Nintendo's original selling point for Wario Land was "Be the bad guy!" It was documented everywhere from press coverage to the box and manual. He took over the Mario Land series right after Mario gave him the boot, and tried to seize a stolen gold statue of Toadstool to hold at ransom. He also still had his wild eyes. Just look at the file select screen and his crooked sprite. Even after the first Wario Land he had further villain roles, like Wario Blast.

I have to say, that Smash Bros 4 artwork looks really ugly compared to the other smooth Wario art. He looks like an animatronic made of shiny plasticine.

I don't really countones like commercial Wario since ones like him seem "Supplemental" to me, for lack of a better term. They need to have been in a game by my standards.

Wario Land! Wario, though to say something about each version:

Early Wario is pretty lovable for how dopey he is and he did do his job as a villain, but ultimately he really doesn't bare much of a resemplance to the character that Wario would become later on.

Yokoi Wario is an interresting trasitional version, planting the seeds for what he would become, while still being strongly linked to Mario and his past history.

Land! Wario is my favorite because it's the one that really represents the character the best in my eyes. Badass, but also wacky, greedy, but he has standards, he is only out for his own gain, but has no problems doing good if that's what he needs to do and he does it in simply spectacular ways. He is simply a fun and witty character, who is also allowed to really shine in moments of sheer awesomeness.

I never really considert Ware! Wario to be that different from Land! Wario to be honest, I always just saw him as Wario in his every day life, when he is not playing serious and I do love his antics too much to really be bothered by the lack of badass moments, even if I do think that these things don't need to be mutually exclusive.

Super Mario! Wario is somewhat similar to Ware! Wario in many regards, except with more emphasis on his strenght and a heavy focus on his rivalry with Mario. I like this version, especially since the many nods to Land and Ware help to unify the two series a bit, but I could do with less moments featuring Wario as the designated loser.

Smash! Wario is primarily characterized by what comes out of his asshole.
Needless to say: I despise this version, if my dozens of rants about it scattered across the forum didn't already give it away.

MarioVSWario has a very interesting twist on Wario, since he is honest to god the more openly sympathetic (to a point where it actually seems intentional to make Mario the bad guy) of the two, especially in the first one, he is really no worse then Mario and it's not surprising to me why people remember these comics as Mario being the reason for Wario being a jerk, more then anything else.

Commercial! Wario is entertaining and memetic, but ultimately not a Wario that I'd want to see in the games,

I kinda like Super Mario Wario more, like an updated version of Wario. I hope they use this model for future Wario Land games, he looks awesome!

That doesn't mean I don't like the others, Yokoi Wario has to come right after.

A very close tie between WL(Wario) and SM(Wario). At this point they're sort of one of the same, blending his WL rigid personality with his more Mario combat and rivalry personality such as in Mario Super Sluggers, Mario Party, Smash, etc which honestly works to his advantage. WW Wario is also pretty good aside from conflicting with his original adventure hobbies.

For me the Wario Land Wario is ¨the¨ Wario. He's the greedy treasure hunter that goes on an adventure like Mario, but unlike Mario he isn't interested in saving a princess. Only the treasures can truly satisfy his hunger of money, but also make him hungry for even more. And there's nothing that will stop him.

Super Mario Wario had the best voice acting, Commercial Wario shows to the general audience what he does and Wario land Wario fleshed out his character and abilities.
