What does Nintendo have against Wario anyway?

Seriously, what do they have against this series? Because both Wario Land and WarioWare seem to be treated like the black sheep of the Nintendo world (even if the latter is treated slightly better), and I don't see much of a reason for it.

It's not even like the unfairly hated Donkey Kong series, which seems to get some disdain from Nintendo for being associated with Rare and their buyout. Wario has always been a pretty popular, high quality Nintendo series, yet it just gets shafted in every way possible. Marketing? None. Smash Bros representation? Terrible. Mario series/crossover representation? Nearly non existent.

What does the company have against Wario Land, WarioWare, Wario as a character, etc?

1. The marketing used to be decent, it wasn't until the Wii/DS era when things went downhill...
2. Smash representation is more of a Sakurai thing than a Nintendo thing and they don't care what he does since the series is going to shovel money no matter what...
3. That's not exactly true, just look at the general Wario references thread and all of
the other similar threads I listed of in it. Sure there could be more but remember:
-They didn't need to put a Wario World remix or Ware styled artworks in Mario Power Tennis's Warios factory.
-They didn't need to include the shoulder charge in Mario Golf World Tour.
And:
-They didn't need to put Wario Land 2 stuff in Game & Watch Gallery 4...
But they did it anyway and that says a lot.
I never got the impression that Nintendo has something against Wario, but I DO get the impression that they just couldn't be arsed to do something with him themselves
and why is that the case?
Because they didn't create him the R&D1 did and Nintendo has always shown a clear preference for their own characters, just look at the way Daisy gets treated VS how Rosalina gets treated or how we have FIVE babies in Mario Kart 8, but no Diddy Kong...

nintendo has always treated R&D1's software legacy kind of like shit.
Kinda funny because they pushed the hell out of Tomodachi Life.

And I agree. Wario really hasn't been getting it as good as he used to. EAD really is the more dominant division.

(Also, I still don't get what people see in Daisy, but that's a whole other thing entirely.)

Well I like her in Mario Party 3 and Mario Tennis 64, but after that yeeeeaaah....
I was just using her as an example since I found the Daisy(R&D1) Rosalina(EAD) comparison fitting.
And before anyone askes: Yes I will stop with my constant anti-Rosalina comments because it's getting grating, even for myself...

I think that it's more a case of Nintendo not knowing what to do with the character.
In terms of platform games Nintendo seems more interested in the New Super Mario Bros series then making another platform Wario game plus the Warioware games sell better.
In terms of games like Warioware Nintendo seems to have cut down on the mascot minigames such as Mario Party and seems more interested in using the Mii's now instead, plus I get the feeling that they are running out of ideas for WarioWare.

Only time will tell.

Yeah. For a while many Donkey Kong fans were like "What does Nintendo have against Donkey Kong?"

A few years later, a miracle happened! Donkey Kong Country Returns!

Who knows, maybe we have to wait for Wario Land Returns.

Hopefully, its by Retro Studios!

It also doesn't help that Good-Feel is trying to forget that they ever made Shake It.

Huh?

Why would they do that? It's not like any of their other games sold much better...

True, as long as Wario sticks around there will always be a glimmer of hope that someone will revive the Land series, like Good Feel did before....

The problem with Wario Land Shake It was that Nintendo did not care at all to promote the game or treat it like it was a big deal. Donkey Kong Country Returns was treated like a big deal by Nintendo. They gave it a lot of hype.

Shake It, while maybe not up to par with the early Wario Land games, was a glorious return to the Wario Land series, meshing the design sensibility of Wario Land 4 with the treasure hunting and random objective-based gameplay of the earlier Wario Lands, plus Captain Syrup came back! What's not to love?

Everything, apparently, given the absolute lack of fanfare, advertising, promotion, or follow up from Nintendo (or anyone else, for that matter).

I wonder if Nintendo's disinterest in Wario Land is because they don't think the greedy treasure hunter concept fits in very well with their modern, casual-centric, clean, white-washed, family-focused image they adopted as of the Wii/DS era. That's when they really started to push Wario Land aside and started promoting WarioWare, which they probably thought would be more casual friendly if they converted it into a slow paced mini-game collection rather than a fast paced micro-game collection. Then Game & Wario flopped, so now Wario as a whole is in this awkward, tenuous position with Nintendo.

It's funny because Yoshi's Island can come out with lackluster sequel after lackluster sequel (with the only truly great one being the original SNES Yoshi's Island, though I admit Wooly World might end up changing that) and still stay on Nintendo's good side, yet Wario Land has never gotten on Nintendo's good side despite consistently pushing out great games (with the sole exception of "Master of Disuise", which wasn't really Wario Land anyway).

It's strange, because New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a Wario Land game disguised as a Mario Bros. game. The main objective, beyond completing levels, is to collect as much loot as possible. Why was that title not New Super Wario Land? Why was it a Mario game?

Everyone thought Wario was going to be a boss that if defeated becomes playable. Roy even has Wario's shoulder barge!

Heh, interesting theory, but... have you seen Wario's behaviour in Wario Land? He's basically greedy jerkass defined.

Just give me your money so I can make my dreams come true!

Also, Wario's greed is hardly unknown in other Nintendo games. Hey New Super Mario Bros 2 (which as said, should have been a Wario game)!
