I think it's actually because WarioWare is really popular in Japan. More popular than Wario Land, even.

It's just that if you're going to mention Wario you have to mention his older series.
I agree. I think Wario Land is more significant than Wario Ware too. Don't get me wrong, I love Wario Ware, but when I think of Wario, I think of the goofy greedy, smelly, strong armed antagonist featured in Mario Land and Wario Land.
