General Wario references thread (Now with Index on page 13).

In other news, the Japanese Club Nintendo very recently posted a WW-themed reward, which is-wait for it-a set of Ashley-themed cleaning cloths!!!!!!!

Kinda shocked to see Nintendo acnowledge the WW cast outside their series, tho.

Well... the merchandise situation is indeed getting better. Although come on, other series get plushies, toys and books. We get... cleaning equipment.

Not a game, but Ko Takeuchi's art archive has a lot of designs very similar to his WarioWare(Rhythm Heaven work (duh?). I swear there was one identical to the dog reporter in the intro of G&W but I can't be arsed to dig in the twitter log to find it.

On the other hand, I have absolutely no idea who this totally original character may be based off.

Oh my... it's definitely a captain ersatz of Ashley. But why? It's not like DeviantArt and other sites frown on fan art... why even bother?

As for Sherbet Land... I still find it amusing how after so many years, the go to ice level for a Mario spinoff comes from a Wario Land game. Does that count as a Wario cameo/reference/shout out in every Mario Kart game ever made?

Not sure if this would count as a reference since it's technically from the same series but... whatever, I like it. ^^

Game & Wario redid some backgrounds from previous games like Dr. Crygor's lab here.

You can also see similarities in Wario's house... but I guess that's to be expected.

Is it bad that I want those cloths, because I do, badly...

Anyway:
Greg the reaper from Conkers bad furday, wears very Wario esque shoes:

Foreman Spikes Wrecking Crew 98 redesign is very reminiscent of Wario:

Warios second jump in Smash 3DS looks very similar to his Wario World jumping animation:

Just looked at the phone straps....
I wanna...

Also (so that this post doesn't descent into spam) here is a little snipped from Warios Meele trophy description:

Wario has herculean strength and can do things that even Mario can't imitate. His unexpected skills include a talent with items and the ability to assume many roles, among them a snowman, a zombie, and a bat.

Wario Land anyone?

I have disected Warios moves and mannerisms in Smash, to find a possible origin for each of them.
I won't mention the Shoulder Charge, Bike or Wario Man, because those are as obvious as you can get.

The chomp was likely inspired by "Hot Dog Hog" a microgame from the first Wario Ware:
WWIMM_HotDogHog.png

One of it's customs is almost identical to the hyper suction from Wario World:

His down throw is the ground pound:

20141104_235913-1.jpg

His up tilt may be inspired by his winning animation in the Twisted microgame "Catch of the day" :
20141104_235923-1.jpg
20141104_225106-1.jpg

His up smash in Smash 4 is very similar to the headbutt in World:
20141104_235934-1.jpg

His up B seems to be a variation of the Corkscrew Conk from World.

His down tilt might be based of the courser from Smooth Moves:

His jumping animation in Smash 4 is similar to the classic Mario jump, Wario has taken over his games in several microgames, mimicing all of Marios mannerisms:

The mega Chomps from Donkey Kong Country returns:
DKCR_Mega_chomp.png

look an awful lot like this enemy from Virtual Boy Wario Land:

It also uses the dual plane mechanic that VB Wario Land introduced.
The heart key from Luigis Mansion:
at 2:31 minutes.
Might be based of the keys that you get from beating bosses in VB Wario Land:

Luigi's Mansion also uses the original Wario Lands idea of getting a better home depending how much loot you collect.

Here are two VERY interesting bits from Mario Party 8:

Using the Vampir candy on a character will turn him/her/it into one.
Hm, Wario as a Vampire:

Using the Springo candy will turn the characters into living springs:

Wario even looks almost identical, only his feet are missing.

Dr.Mario 64 has even more references beyond the characters that were already mentioned.

Puffy Wario makes an appearence in two of the story mode cutscenes:

Vampir Wario's losing animation has him turn into his bat form:

Para Goom may not be a opponent/playable character but he does get to narrate the menues:

You will never guess what one of the randomly chossen leaderboard names in Mario Golf Toadstool Tour is:
20141109_000841-1.jpg
20141109_000841-2.jpg

Mind. Blown.

Note: I tried this in german and the name didn't show up. I changed my system settings to english and got it on my first try meaning that some localisations don't have this.

The night version of Mario Super Sluggers' Wario City has a neon sign of the Wario Ware bomb:

It also appears on his team logo once more and it has a nose, for some reason:

Wario is one of the few characters in Smash that can crawl, which is a nod to the 2D Wario plattformers.

Well, this was a very reference filled week. XD

There are a lot of weird names in the Mario Golf/Tennis series leaderboards:

http://nintendo3dsdaily.com/nintend...n-more-facts-you-dont-know-about-mario-games/

The Phantamanta from Mario Sunshine shows up, as well as a character from a Mario comic book. Lots of really weird references there, although no one's ever listed all of them...

There also seem to different names depending on the translation, because I tried to get Bobo's name with my system settings in german and it never came, while the german version has Tubba Blubba from the original Paper Mario.
And as for a complete list, I'm willing to do a full list with all the names in both the german and the english translation, not right now thought sometime in the future.

Kept you waiting, huh?

This time with Super Mario 64 DS:

Wario on the cover seems to be doing a shoulder charge:

The way Wario picks up and carries things around is very similar to Wario World:
20141114_143020-1.jpg

The next one isn't really a reference, since Mario could already do it in the original, but it's still cool:
20141114_143147-1.jpg

Wario using an owl to fly.
We haven't seen that since the good ol' days of Land 3.

The Badwagon from Mario Kart 9, has a bit of a resemplance to the Wario car, it's also Wario's vehicle of choice on his only artwork from the game:
MK8_Wario_Artwork.png

The symbol on the "Wario Wing" is the same one from most of the Wario Ware covers:
WarioWingMK8.png

Glowsquid already metioned the Wario bike beeing in Mario Kart Wii, but since I already have a pic:
