The Mario RPG thread

Been thinking for a bit, in regards to Superstar Saga's translations, I always found it interesting how the Mario RPG translations all kind of go their own way, while still being based off the same script, Fawful and the Peasley/Luigi subtext were alredy mentioned in regards to the german script, but there are a number of other interesting ways where it differs in some form from the english one:

-In the german version Cackletta never refers to herself as Bowletta, while using that form, making it look like it's actually Lady Lima that comes up with the name, when at a loss on how to call her and the good guys just run with it.

-Popple doesn't have his ''See?'' verbal tic.

-The Chuckola Cola and Reserve are refered to as types of wine in the german version, to a point where they are most commonly refered to as ''Witzwein'' (Joke Wine).

-Since there are different standards in regards to what's considered a swear it's not unusual to see the occasional ''verdammt'' (damn) come up. It is technically still a swear, but it's very uncommon in the usual modern everyday language, which is likely why it tends to get a pass.

On a similar note, instead of telling Mario and Luigi that they are ''thtupid'' Hermie III in the german version straight up drops a ''verpiffen'' a slightly obscured version of ''verpissen'', in other words: he's bluntly telling the Mario Bros to piss off.

Those are ones that come to my mind right now and I'd actually be willing to look through the whole game to list off as many noteworthy german/english script differences as I can find, if anyone here is interested in that.

The reason I'm thinking about this is that while the original german script was good, it had some odd things about it, particulary Fawful, who didn't get his broken grammar or food metaphors until the next game and with the Bowser's Minions mode featuring new content involving him I'm just very curious what they are going to do.

I heard Fawful in the original Japanese script was a rather boring character whose entire shtick is saying "ru" at the end of sentences.

Fawful generally tends to be almost completely different in every language, from what I tend to hear around, which makes it a lot more surprising for me that they pretty much just used the english script's take on him for german Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story (while still keeping the stutter from Superstar Saga). Not that I mind though, if anything I actually really appreciate it.

Also, two more notable things:

-Unlike the english version where Bowser and his goons have a large variety of names for Luigi, the german version only has ''Grünkäppchen'', a reference to ''Rotkäppchen'' the german name for the Little Red Riding Hood.

-Not so much a script difference, but likely just an error: When Popple finds Luigi in Teehee Valley he calls out to Birdo who is off screen, but calls her ''Famula'' :

The name has no relevance to Birdo and he even just calls her Birdo and Azubi (Rookie) right afterwards, so it was likely just a really weird mistake.

What does...famula mean?

Actually I just looked it up, while it has no meaning in german (unless you count Famulateur, which is very far removed from anything that could be relevant here) it is a latin word for servant or mate among other things, which makes a degree of sense, but is still incredibly random in the context of the german translation, given that there aren't any latin phrases anywhere else.

The whole "see" thing is a common thief/criminal/gangster trope in english but I can't think of anything in german that could compare to it.
So it's understandable that they just left it out.
Actually, wait a minute! I shouldn't just assume they would carry things over from the english translation in the first place, most likely they translated the original japanese version, not the english one. So it makes sense that the characters would talk differently.

By the time the second game came out the characters like fawful had gained popularity in the english-speaking part of the internet so it made sense to carry over their mannerisms into german as well.

Yeah, Germany isn't very stuck up when it comes to swearing. The only stuff that is really entirely off-limits from family friendly media is sexual stuff.
Words like piss or shit can often be heard in childrens shows.
There was one show with a character called "Klugscheißer" (Smartass/literally "smart shitter) who was a talking pile of shit and I guess everyone just found it funny. :STongue:
We didn't even need Conker's bad fur day to see a talking shit. :STongue2:

And right now I'm watching a children's show from the 60s that uses the word shitting quite liberally in one scene and just makes fun on the fact that you shouldn't say it. :Sx3: The usually polite and rational adult says shitting while the usually naive, child-like and bratty character urges him not to use such words. :sgrin:

(I've read the following posts but this one seems most appropriate to quote)
I definitely think that was intended: Popple is pretty much using Birdo as a female slave...

Something that just came to my mind, I really hope that Alphadream secures themselves the permission from Square to keep Geno's cameo around, in the Superstar Saga remake:

I know that it's as small and insignificant as you can get, but these types of small surprises are among the many things that I adore about the M&L series.

What would be the alternative if they didn't? That mini game would feel pretty strange without Geno in it...

Maybe some sort of mechanical Toad or beanish folk, I mean I completely agree that Geno is a part of the minigame's charm, but he's also a special case that requires permission from another company. Now granted I'm fairly confident that they will keep him, but it just crossed my mind right now that he is a more complicated subject.

I don't see why they couldn't get him in again. If they can get a geno costume into Smash, they should be able to get his cameo in there as well.

I wonder if Nintendo will keep the Paper Mario reference in the Woohoo Hooniversity.
If they keep the "they are seperste worlds", they might get rid of it.
Oh man, don't remind me...

That whole block research room is just another reminder why I hate these recent homogenized Mario designs.

If they made one of those rooms today it would just be rows and rows of the exact same block for every NSMB game, every Galaxy, 3D world, 3D Land, etc.

I wonder if they will even keep that room in the 3DS remake, seeing how averse they are to old designs that are different from the "modern" Mario look.

You know what I just remembered?

I wonder what they're gonna do with this...

How are they gonna handle these posters?
Are they gonna keep them the same? Are they gonna replace them?
Are they gonna add new ones?
Would they be able to keep the Kaabi and Staafi ones?

They better not replace our Wah's poster!
