The Mario RPG thread

New trailer centering around the Toad Rescue Squad, in case anyone cares:

If nothing else it's at least nice to see that the dialogue seems to have evolved from Sticker Star's endless, repetetive and tiring ''hurr, durr, everythin's papah, cuz papah mareoh'' stick.

I didn't think it was too bad. I like the parody of old school tokusatsu shows. Gameplay itself looks unremarkable though and the overworld just looks gimmicky and potentially tedious.

A very, very small step up from what we've gotten recently.

Still not buying it.

That moment when a Mario RPG from 20 years ago has more unique designs for their Power Rangers parody than this.

Axem Rangers were fun to fight considering the Super Sentai parody they all were counterparts of our heroes as well. The Koopa Bros too being both a parody of Super Sentai and TMNT, two for the price of one.

I'm still anything but sold on the game, but I am enjoying the Rescue Squad so far, they actually have personalitys, didn't think that could be a thing in a Sticker Star influenced Paper Mario game.

Welp, the way bosses are handled really is still like it was in Sticker Star, I was hoping that the Morton battle wouldn't be indicative of that, but they really haven't learned a thing.

Aside from the Rescue Squad this still looks like garbage just like Sticker Star. Feels like Nintendo and for that matter Intelligent Systems don't really know what an rpg is anymore making these latest Paper Mario games.

I would like to know what IS would've ended up doing if they had more freedom since the settings were getting progressively less Mario-like.

less Mario-like.
You mean less generic? :STongue2:

I think it never got to a point where I thought "WHAT THE HECK IS THIS DOING IN A MARIO GAME!?"
I mean even when they go to "hell" they still treat it with a silly attitude, calling it the place you go when "your game is over".

But that's just in terms of places and visuals.
When they actually deal with serious subjects in the story, like loss of a loved one (Bobbery's tale, Count Bleck's tale), adoption (paralleled with Luvbi, her parents not being her "real" parents), and gender identity issues (Vivian), then they do it in a very mature manner. I like when they do that.

That's one of the problems Sticker Star (& presumably Color Splash) had. There was no drama. No dread. No sadness. The closest thing to a negative emotion we got at all was Wiggler getting angry at the Bloopers polluting the forest. Meanwhile, some of the more memorable moments of the previous games were when you actually felt sad for the characters. Whether it was Bobbery, Bleck, Vivian, Luvbi, Jolene, or even some of the minor characters like Pine T. Jr..

Well that's another way of putting it. I mean I'm just saying for the first 3 games the setting became progressively less recognizable as a Mario one though I didn't see it as a bad thing. I'm just saying I'm curious if they would've continued this trend or do something different if left alone.

Yeah me too actually.
*sigh*... it's just sad to think they had built up this universe, this continuity, this canon... just so it could get flushed down the drain by the next game.

I wish I knew what these unused worlds would've been like...

Oh look! A partner! Oh look! An original enemy! It's almost like they wanted to make an actual Paper Mario game. :S8V:
