Some interesting points about Fiery Cavern...

For example, did you ever wonder what would happen if you went to through the top right exit in the first room?

Or whether it would somehow lead to an unfrozen version of the rooms after the Frog Switch? Yeah, so did I. After all, the map picture just cuts off at this point:

Well, I tried it. Immediately, the level partially froze over and I got warped to the icy versions of the room.

Which leads to me believe that this whole 'freezes over' thing isn't really the case. The level doesn't actually freeze the rooms you explore; it just warps you to a frozen version of the level. The only rooms that 'change' are the Frog Switch room and the one with the portal.

A few other findings confirmed this theory too. For example, did you know that the pipe isn't solid when the level is 'frozen'? No really, you just fall through it. The warp to the bonus room has been carefully removed.

Most enemies are gone in normally unreachable areas too. You'd think they'd have Yetis in frozen versions of fiery rooms or boulder tossers in the other ones, but they don't. Presumably, loading enemies in unused areas was too heavy on resources.

Additionally, a lot of doors don't work either. They just spin Wario in place and kick him out immediately.

Other 'exits' like the one to the left of this frozen geyser:

Simply don't exist. There's just an invisible wall that Wario gets stopped by.

The same area doesn't have breakable walls any more. No pipe again either.

And while that diamond does actually exist in the lava version, it still respawns if you collect it and then visit the ice version of the room.

Oh, and this one block above the ladder is such an obvious 'fix' isn't it? I mean, it doesn't even blend in with the surroundings!

So yeah, seems like Fiery Cavern is a much simpler level that people think it is, especially in the level design/tech sense.
