Wario in Mushroom Kingdom Fusion

If you like Nintendo fan games, you'll probably know of Mushroom Kingdom Fusion. It's an insanely awesome, over the top crossover between pretty much every gaming franchise on the planet, with Mario, Link, Sonic, Wario, Arthur and others all fighting through worlds from across the gaming universe. Here's a cool trailer of it:

But what else did it have? Perhaps the best portrayal of Wario in any non Wario specific fan game ever:

Behold, Wario in action. Wario vs Gears of War:

And Wario in a military war zone:

But do you know what's even better? He has a whole TON of great Wario references in his moveset and setup.

For one thing, his music is from Super Mario Land 2 and Wario Land 2 respectively. His Star Man theme is his boss battle song from Six Golden Coins:

And his win level song (as far as I can remember) is from Wario Land 2:

Other cool things include Rice Beach, a nice Wario Land themed level:

They've got so much cool stuff in this level. Wario Land 1's tilesets are included. Awesome remixes of the Rice Beach, cave and boss songs are included. And enemies... wow. They've got Pirate Gooms, Wandering Gooms, Droppers, crabs, those chickens you can feed enemies too, the slimes, the duck head ghosts, the pirates throwing swords, Penkoons, those jellyfish things that float up at you...

and hey, got to love the boss, cause it's the spiked koopa from Wario Land 1! Who even explodes dramatically when defeated!

Oh, and they coded all the other enemies too. Didn't use 'em, but hey, they look cool:

Finally, Wario also has some cool power ups, with the Jet Hat and Dragon Hat being obtainable powerups that work like in Wario Land 1, and Vampire Wario acting as his Tanooki Suit equivalent. So yeah, he's been represented pretty well in the game in my opinion, and his representation here is exactly how he should have been in Smash Bros and its single player modes.

What do you expect? It's a fan made crossover, so getting matching sprites would require a massive amount of effort and would probably take about a decade (minus the backgrounds and foregrounds, which would add another 50 years or so).

The same issue is in every fan made crossover ever made. Smash Bros Crusade, Smash Bros Flash, Super Mario Crossover, Brutal Mario, etc.

What do you expect? It's like how it works with Smash Bros; you include everything in an attempt to try and market to 'everyone' and act as fanservice in game form.

Personally, I like crazy crossovers sometimes. Reminds me of what it used to be like as a fan, before everyone took things so seriously.

Hasn't Sakurai said several times that he doesn't want Smash to be the bloated, "fantarded" mess that everyone wants it to be? He's often said things to the effect of "We can only do so much" and that it's not as simple as everyone thinks it is.

If you do play Smash a lot, you'll see that it doesn't even take franchise representation as seriously as the fans do. It's there, but the overall focus still lies mostly in new ways to play.

If it was up to me I wouldn't try to please everyone and just put in the essential characters and content. Not too much to make it bloated. And I would be fair to each franchise making sure they all have a balanced representation.

Anyway if Mushroom Kingdom Fusion was being developed under me I'd either make it a crossover with just Nintendo characters or a crossover between six different companies and using one character from each.

Mushroom Kingdom Fusion Nintendo Edition would feature:
Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, Pikachu, Villager

WORLD 1: Mushroom Kingdom
WORLD 2: Hyrule
WORLD 3: Zebes
WORLD 4: Popstar
WORLD 5: Kanto
WORLD 6: Distant Planet
WORLD 7: Eagleland
WORLD 8: Nintendo Subspace
WORLD -1: Minus World

Mushroom Kingdom Fusion 3rD Party Edition would have:
Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Simon Belmont, Slime

WORLD 1: Mushroom Kingdom
WORLD 2: Mobius
WORLD 3: 20XX
WORLD 4: Pac-Land
WORLD 5: Castlevania
WORLD 6: Alefgard
WORLD 7: Subspace
WORLD 8: Twisted Reality
WORLD -1: Minus World

You'd still have your issue with graphics though. How do you expect to get 2D platformer style Zelda tiles? Or make content from Pokemon, Smash Bros, Zelda, Mother, Pikmin and Mario look 'consistent'?

That's exactly why Mushroom Kingdom Fusion and others have to look that way.

It's also why I don't care about any artistic 'clash' in my own fan games. Cause it's pretty much impossible to avoid.

On another note... your ideas are cool, though the second one is basically the current Mushroom Kingdom Fusion. You've got the Mario, Sonic, Mega Man and general Nintendo worlds. The Castlevania world as a new Demon Realm, Alefgard as a new Adventurer's Domain and the last two straight from the official world list...

You make custom sprites of course. You can make custom Zelda sprites in the same sprite style as the Mario sprites. Heck here's someone who made Link in Mega Man style:

So it shouldn't be a problem.

The last two worlds have the same name but have different levels. There's no Halo, there's no Doom, and a lot of other things. Twisted Reality just contains a mixture of all the previous worlds. Subspace has levels from games that aren't featured in the previous worlds.

I like the mismatched sprites look. It makes the game feel way more nostalgic than if they'd used a bunch of fan-made sprites.

That too. A lot of the appeal of these crossover fan games and hacks is the 'Mario and co in other worlds' contrast.
