WLII lacks strong iconography. Most of the worlds have generic themes and lack a vivid aesthetic (I find WLII feels unintentionally like a slightly surreal dead world while WLIII is intentionally so, if that makes sense), and with half of the bosses being generic giant spearman, most of the bits...
1: something like WL2 or WL3. those are my personal favourites WLs and none of the current Nintendo platformers are doing anything like those.
2: Do something completely OTT and make it a fully-assed single plane 2D beat em up. Something like Mad Stalker or Guardian Heroes
