I did a bit of 'research' (aka looked at polls as well as the amount of fan fics by character on Fan Fiction.net)...

And it seems like it's actually a lot closer than people think. For example, there seem to be more votes for 9 Volt than Ashley on many of the polls, especially those on gaming forums. And on forums like Mario Kart Wii, NeoGAF, etc, Mona and Jimmy T and various others seem to be extremely popular as well.

As for fan fic... well, disturbingly, I saw quite a few fan fics labelled as shipping between 9 Volt and the author's avatar/original character... which is awkward given that the character is (presumably like Ashley and Kat and Ana) a pre teen kid).

So who is the most popular character? Cause based on various polls, the answer may surprise you:

In a lot of ways I’m not suprised, whenever I mention Wario Ware characters in a conversation 9-Volt is generally the one everyone remembers because his stages are just THAT beloved and whenever I see people talk about them wanting Wario charas in Mario spin offs I generally see Mona and Captain Syrup brought up way more then Ashley, then again that’s what I see around and doesn’t need to mean a damn.
 
You know I'm really surprised that people are still voting in 9-Volt and 18-Volt as their favourite even now. I would've thought that people would've gotten fed up with the retro replay novelty by now, but I guess not?

Actually I've heard 9-Volt doesn't make microgames any more; Ever since he saw Pixels he's been staring into his bathroom mirror and weeping. Maybe he doesn't like Adam Sandler or something, I'm not sure.

Fortunately, I don't think he'd be too affected by Pixels. That movie only used Donkey Kong as far as major Nintendo characters go, most are from older Atari and arcade games.

If it'd had giant versions of Mario, Link, Samus, Pit or Kirby attacking Earth... then he'd be depressed.

I posted Ashley V 9-volt on Nintendo community a month ago.

Ashley had 68% of the votes while 9-volt had 32%, I would have to go through a lot to find the poll again, I don't know if anyone else voted.
