I'm not sure if it's the kind of story you like but some excellent classic lit is the collection of Sherlock Holmes stories. It's not too outdated and the narrative has a good pace.

I actually own the whole collection. My only real issue with it is that the mysteries aren't fair. (But I also give it credit, because back when Doyle wrote them, fairness rules on mystery stories weren't common.) But besides that, Sherlock Holmes is p fun and easy to read.

Watson can only be the narrator. Only Watson, no one else. (I say as Holmes has been a narrator too.)

I still need to read Hound of the Baskervilles. People say that's the best story so far but personally A Study In Scarlet has been my favorite.
