Do I spy a fellow "kutthroat"? Ha! King K. Rool has been my most-wanted for a long time, since the pre-Brawl era. After Smash 4 tarnished the hopes of DK fans worldwide, I'm really excited and optimistic to see what Ultimate brings us. Sakurai pulled a 180 -- he's LISTENING to the fans. If somebody with a reputation as notorious as Ridley can get in, the krafty kroc may yet be playable... I only hope the unabashed bias against DKC and its Western roots doesn't hold him back yet again.

@Billy the Giant I've seen no evidence of either. He's praised multiple western gmaes in his Famitsu chronicle over the years and cited the first DKC as a big inspiration for Kirby's SUperstar

The first DKC did gangbusters in Japan - it was the first western-developed game to sell over one million copy and at 3 millions sold for the SNES version alone, remains the best-selling western game there. The sequels did great too - infact, DKC3 sold *better* in Japan than it did in the west. Donkey Kong 64 made it to a Famitsu poll for the "most memorable" games as recently as 2016. Look at musical uploads of the DKC soundtrack on the Japanese youtube and niconico and you'll see ton of goodwill regarding the series.

Tropical Freeze hasn't done well there and stuff like SMash Bros's snubbing of the series and Nintendo's clumsy handling of Donkey Kong after Rare's sale has given people a warped idea DKC is somehow obscure and unpopular in Japan. Nothing could be further from the truth - Japan loves Donkey Kong Country.
