I think a timeline split does occur following Wario Land, but the "main" timeline (where most of the games occur, including Warioware) is the one where he gets enough money to obtain a castle. He later loses the castle at the start of Wario World and the spritelings were incapable of restoring...

I think that is it though. Nintendo making a reference to the Virtual Boy here and there doesn't really mean anything, the fact they do it in the first place feels like it's more out of obligation and consistency since they reference the rest of their products.

I'd prefer if they go back to the old designs, but the Gold designs don't bug me that much anymore so I wouldn't care if they decided to stick with them.

The early ones look neat. I started on SMT1 but got up to the point post nuclear war when I finally ragequitted because I couldn't stand any more of those damn first person mazes. This is coming from someone who beat Phantasy Star 2 which has maps like this.

I'll have to agree with WL1 for what everyone else has been saying regarding the Wario Land that aged worst. As far as the one that aged best? Hmmm... Wario Land 4 with Shake It being a contender. Granted, Shake It is one of the few Wario games I haven't yet played but it looks pretty clean...
