I think it depends on whether a third party developer can come up with a compelling pitch for Nintendo. I think Renegade Kid who developed Mutant Mudds tried to pitch a remake of VB Wario Land on the 3DS to Nintendo but Nintendo declined. Though that might have to do with it being Virtual Boy...

I might be misremembering but I don't think this was exactly "lost" I think it was previously only viewable on the 3DS. Interesting to see and seems better than what we ended up getting but I still see glimpses of things I'd dislike from later Paper Mario games. The sticker system seems like it...
