Anyone feel disappointed by Shake It's levels?

CM30

Diamond City Mayor
Diamond City Leader
I have to admit, I did sometimes. Quite a few of them were a bit too 'generic' for my liking, especially all those seemingly similar jungle levels.

And the secret levels... were arguably some of the better ones. So it makes me wonder... why did we even have the 'normal' versions?

Cause Freezing Fields was better than Slipshod Slopes. Boogie Mansion (mostly) better than Bad Manor. Prism Prison was better than Airytale Castle... so why not just have the secret levels replace their normal counterparts and have some more interesting ideas for the secret ones? The only secret level in the game which felt like a secret level was Launchpad Labyrinth, the others should have been standard levels.

Anyone agree?

I had a lot of fun playing them, so I was disappointed more in the aesthetic aspects, since the levels aren't as crazy as in the earlier games. Still, many have interesting gameplay concepts, such as the Wariomarine levels, the Wario plane in Airytale Castle, the ropespinning at Just Plains, etc.

Yeah, it's a shame that so many of them are just repeats with a different color palette.
And if you only count each theme once then there isn't much variety...
I feel like they only wanted to choose themes that were.... I dunno how to put it... realistic? Like... there are no outlandish themes like there were in Wario Land 4.
Like all of Topaz passage or Pinball Zone, places that would really only exist in a video game.
Instead there are a lot of nature/old structures themed levels:
Ruins, Desert, Canyon, Plains/Savannah, Underwater, Volcano, Cave/Mine, Jungle,...
The most outlandish thing is really just the castle in the sky theme but visually it's still very similar to the other temples... except it has clouds...

Well, at least there's an awesome train level and the casino theme is nice...

Like you said, CM30, they were all pretty generic and "trope-y".

Wario Land 4's levels also had familiar themes but they would always put some sort of spin on it or fill them with interesting mechanics.

It wasn't the levels per-say. It was just how the game felt. In other Wario games everything is "WHAM-POW-BOOM!" In Shake It everything felt "piff-puff-poof".

It just didn't have the edge that other Wario games had. I'm throwing a rubber ball at a switch *yawn*. In Wario Land 4 I'm throwing old men through rock walls!

They do feel empty compared to past games. I think you guys put it better than I could. Heck, even before I read your explanations, it felt off, even though I couldn't put my finger on it.
