Giana, and her younger Sister "Maria" made their debut as a little Mario Clone on the Commodore 64. It was short lived (Due to a C&D by Nintendo) but was a neat little gem that received positive response from gamers alike. And was probably a better option than playing Super Mario Bros. Special on the PC88. And even so. Even having some differences that made the gameplay feel different than SMB1 to begin with after the first few levels.
That wouldn't be the last we would see of them though, in 2009 Giana made her return in Giana Sisters DS. A system by the very company who tried to erase her ironically. It was a simple yet new take on the formula, Collectibles to unlock secret areas, New Gameplay Mechanics, and it felt much more than just a simple Mario Clone.
And now, starting from a kickstarter in 2012. Giana ventured into the dream world once more in Giana Sisters - Twisted Dreams. This was an entirely new rework on the series, It kept some nods to Mario but was generally it's own thing. A unique "twist" mechanic where you switched between her 2 forms, Tons of goodies in every level, A legendary soundtrack and an extreme challenging difficulty yet enjoyable experience.
