Thoughts on AI in game development and society?

What do you think about it?

On the one hand, it's hard to deny we've not seen some crazy projects become possible that weren't even a consideration before. Like that Breath of the Wild 3DS port, or those ports of Super Mario 64 to every platform under the sun.

At the same time though, I'm very much not a fan of how it was trained on everyone else's work without permission, the environmental impact of the technology, or how damaging it might be to a sustainable society.

Feels like we're entering a very risky time at the moment, that's for sure...

Imagine living in a society ruled by copyright laws, and letting someone else insert more-or-less edited versions of others' works into your own, no notice or anything.

But that raises a big question. Should copyright laws be a lot more lenient? I feel like part of the issue is that there's a level of hypocrisy here. The way AI is being treated by some courts is how other things should have been treated.

If you mean by other things fangames and romhacks then yes, those never claim to be original material so unless authors make money with it, nobody should bother them like Nintendo does. It's a matter of being honest and transparent with what you do, and those LLMs, the companies behind and the users aren't imo.

True, the companies working on AI are complete assholes, and should be significantly more regulated.

But remove those from the picture. Assume local models become more common. How should they be regulated or treated by society?

AI started to become relevant as soon as I start learning how to draw and getting old enough to make my own original game.

I really hate (much like most people) the fact that AI literally steals work from others without any consent whatsoever to train. At least copying an artstyle takes actual skill (if you don't layer it) and even then, usually people add their own spices, their own personality y'know, so it makes up for a variant of this artstyle, it's actually an interesting thing to see! Same thing for writing, yes people are inspired by other people's work but they add their own twist to it, said twist influenced the experiences their soul went through, an AI does that have a soul.

Also apparently now people are cloning indie games with AI... That's so cool of those to do that! Such a selfless and noble service! /sarc

There's also people using AI for things like coding or other sciences. If you actually know what you're doing, I suppose it could be somewhat acceptable but still.... it still kills a lot of the problem solving and I just hope if people aren't just copying and pasting code and are using AI in things like troubleshooting, speeding up tedious and redundant tasks or similar. Personally, I refrain from using AI while coding because at the end of the day, I wanna actually learn how to code and genuinely understand what I'm doing.

Furthermore the environmental impacts which are pretty terrifying... But the companies behind AI couldn't care less and won't stop until it start affecting them directly. And since most money that AI generates come from investments and not actual income, I don't know if boycotting would do any good.

And not to forget the normalization of talking to AIs as a replacement to living breathing company. That sure won't mess with society! /sarc
Like people used to be extremely wary of stranger online and say that they replacing real connections (which did happen very often tbh) but at least those online connections were between 2 human beings that both have a soul.

I probably got somethings wrong because I'm not an expert on AI but my opinions about it are fairly negative. It does have a few perks like being able to speed up tedious and repetitive processes but because how many jobs and hobbies it kills, as well making misinformation way easier because of deepfakes and whatnot and also so, so, so many other things I didn't list, I'm pretty opposed to most of it. If only the people working on AI had y'know, the tiniest of concerns for the future of humanity, it would go much better but it's not like literal diabolical people being in power is anything new, and it's probably not gonna change for a bit, a long bit.
