I doubt Birdo will be a main character. Feels like each area has a character that appears for a few minutes or so, then they move on. Of course, I could be wrong and they ship her with Birdo or something. Eh, it works for what it's aiming for...

Personally I'm not sure how much of it will fit into the same story as last time around, but it does have a ton of interesting stuff nonetheless. Like Baby Mario and Luigi, the T. Rex from Odyssey, and even Mouser and Clawgrip from Super Mario...

Yeah I saw that too. Hopefully they change their mind at some point, those games were neat. And fair enough. Yeah Mario Golf feels like it's almost guaranteed. Also yeah, I can see them giving another less explored sports series another shot...
