Hooper Humperdink? Not Him!

... Nevermind my obscure references, the good Angler's memories of Bubsy seem to have been jogged recently, ever since that (horrible) new title was announced out of the blue. He's certainly the biggest fan of ol' Bubsy Bobcat I've ever seen. And, for what it's worth, Angler does make some good points about what made the games special; the cartoon design is actually quite charming, especially for it's time. It's just a shame that this new entry in the series is decidedly unfaithful and ignorant to what made Bubsy, well... Bubsy. A pointless revival of a classic series is a fate I wouldn't wish on even the most loathsome of video game franchises.

Why Bubsy? Why ever not?
I know it's hip to hate the Bubster these days, but put yourself in my shoes. When I was a lad, Bubsy 1 was a popular underdog platformer because it was a haphazard game that played like a cartoon.

It was bloody challenging and unforgiving, because the game was built around mishaps. It was a game about survival, so you needed to read the manual and watch the in-game tutorial to know what you're doing. It also rewarded exploration, and had tons of replay value.
As for the sequels, they ruined all the promise the first game showed, but I still enjoyed them (they had their highlights).

I'm currently writing a little chapter for Bubsy on the Animation Appreciation thread, so I'll post a link if you want to stop by. I promise you'll be informed and entertained!
