There's two I wanna talk about. The first one is Super Mario 63, as a kid, I didn't have Super Mario 64 (because I'm born in the late 2000s) but I wanted to play it so bad when I discovered there was a fully fledged Super Mario games based on it. I got extremely invested into it. I finished multiple times back then and to be completely honest this game is actually legendary. I genuinely think Nintendo should take a note from it and make a 2D Super Mario that isn't linear for once and kind of original. Wonder was good but left a lot to be desired.

The second is actually a Scratch game called Super Mario for Scratch 4. This one has the same formula as SM63, a 2D game with 4 stages and bolts (akin to star, shine sprites or moons) to collect in each stages. I also played it a lot back when it came out and it's really good, not just for Scratch but is actually a fun time. I really recommend checking it out. You can configure a controller by the way, on the page I linked, click on Addons, then seach "gamepad" and enable Gamepad Support. Return to the game page and you should see a controller icon above the game window. Just bind keys to your controller and you are good to go.

I was searching for Mario games on Itch.io, and saw one that said it could run on a browser, but then I saw a comment on it saying "haha, my PC has anti-virus, you can't hack me", so then I got the heck out of dodge.

I'm with you on Super Mario 63, that game is a formative childhood memory for me. Outside of some glitches, it still holds up as a game I love to revisit every couple years. I struggle to think of many others that match that game's quality... maybe it's time to reinstall Flashpoint.
This isn't exactly a favorite of mine, but I wanna talk about another fan web game that imprinted on me. Before 63, I stumbled upon a handful of other, much smaller Mario flash games. One of them was "New Super Mario Bros Flash", which is to my memory the first game I ever played with Mario in it! It's unremarkable now and even was then, but I vividly remember when starting the game, you hear Mario say "Let's-a-go!"... except, either the audio quality wasn't perfect, or I couldn't make out exactly what he said, because I heard him say "Get the gold!"! This encouraged me to pick up every single coin in that game, and many other Mario games I played afterward. It's amazing how a Mario fan develops when her first Mario games aren't from Nintendo... though I guess getting all that gold prepared me for my seemingly indefinite Wario phase!
