How would you make the Wario series more popular?

As we know, Nintendo's handling of the Wario series and marketing in general, is not great. Wario Land Shake It sold about a million copies, but then ended up actually get discontinued for no real apparent reason. WarioWare DIY sold less than the the other WarioWare titles, perhaps due a complete lack of offline advertising. And Game & Wario... well, as interesting a gimmick as the Crowdfarter thing was, the game itself sold maybe 300,000 copies at best.

So how would you try and make it more popular, both on and offline? I'd do the following:

1. Actually advertise the games (and in clever ways). Because let's face it, old school Wario commercials were... interesting:

More of that stuff please. Less 'families dancing around a television like morons while crappy music plays'.

2. Get a good, well known developer to make the next game (ideally a Wario Land title). It should be as close to a 'reboot' as possible, handled by someone like Retro Studios with a lot of credibility and experience and treated as an AAA level game instead of a C level one.

This would get more gaming sites covering the series, would get it more hype at E3 or other events and would generally get more people buying the game when it's out, because Retro or the likes have a much better brand reputation than say... Suzak or GoodFeel.

3. A launch event of some kind. Really, even Yoshi's New Island got a Nintendo World Store event, so it'd be damn nice if the next Wario Land game got one too.

4. Encourage the online community more. If you want a series to have a long standing fanbase, you need to try and get people outside of the odd social media site to care about it and follow the series long term. Nintendo should try and work with sites like this one to achieve that.

So how would you make the Wario series more popular if you were in charge at Nintendo?

Basically Nintendo needs to take the series more seriously. I remember before Donkey Kong Country Returns, all the Paon DK games were pretty much treated like crap by Nitnedo and therefor sold like crap.

But Returns they treated like something important. They promoted the game like crazy! Creating all kinds of events, commercials, and more. That's what they need to do for Wario. Treat the next Wario game like it's a big deal and the public will think it's a big deal.

Remember Wario Land Shake It? No commercials. Barely any promotion.

I agree with this 100%. You bother to promote a game heavily and make a big deal of it, then other people will treat it like a big deal too.

Shove it off to the side and hope you can quietly move it into game stores (like Game & Wario) and your game will probably fail miserably.

This also makes me think of something else that Nintendo should probably do. Namely, realise that advertising niche games on internet channels alone is NOT enough. Seriously, the only place you can find ads for more obscure Nintendo games (or pretty much all of them in the UK) is the internet, on sites like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Nintendo's official sites.

Problem is, that doesn't get people to care about games. People on the internet tend to know what they're looking for or are interested in. People who watch ads on TV or real life promotional events don't. They might suddenly wonder what that interesting game is and decide to check it out.

People online aren't like this. They view Nintendo's sites for information on the big name titles they already tend to know about or plan to buy, and that's that. People on Nintendo's site and Twitter and Youtube and whatever last year didn't go 'oh look, Game & Wario looks interesting', they were mostly there for Smash Bros, Pokemon X/Y, Mario 3D World or maybe Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon.

Some good points. here. I think that Nintendo generally need to do more to promote games beyond their core line-up. Art Style series, Pilotwings, DK King of Swing series, etc. They have plenty of means to highlight such games now, especially with Nintendo Direct. Makes no sense to me.

  1. Put Ashley on the cover.
  2. Trailer with Ashley
  3. Advice Ashley some more.
Boom, insta success.

Also advice it some more on TV, Youtube and a lot of other places. Advice it over the city with posters and such, that would give the game a push.
I'm just going to say this once. I am not sure if you truly believe this but I just need to let this out. Characters that are popular on the internet are not necessarily true draws. They are just fan favorites but don't have the widerspread appeal of truely popular characters. Most people don't buy games solely for a character. While people enjoy seeing their favorite characters first and foremost people want to spend money on a good game.

It waz just a joke. The real part was the ending of the comment "advice it some more on TV, Youtube and a lot of other places. Advice it over the city with posters and such, that would give the game a push."

Sorry, you've said it so many times it seemed it could've been either a joke or serious or even saying something serious in a joking manner.

A 3d adventure style action RPG game, done with cel shaded graphics, done in a hand-drawn kinda style with an open world, or at least a hub world like TTYD or whatever. Where you could level up Wario, learn new skills, make friends and team mates that are playable and really put alot into making it a great game and not a cash grab.

Well, thats more like something Id personally like. What would make it more popular with the rest of the world, I dunno : p I mean, Nintendo itself isnt really popular with most people anyway, it seems to be more like a large dedicated fan base that goes after Nintendo games. (And casual and younger newbie gamers)

Maybe they can do something like a platformer death match kinda game,I think Conkers Bad fur Day for N64 had a death match multiplayer thingy that people liked. Maybe making a game like that could draw in a /few/ new people. But selling anything Nintendo to Non Nintendo people seems impossible : p
