As we know, Nintendo's handling of the Wario series and marketing in general, is not great. Wario Land Shake It sold about a million copies, but then ended up actually get discontinued for no real apparent reason. WarioWare DIY sold less than the the other WarioWare titles, perhaps due a complete lack of offline advertising. And Game & Wario... well, as interesting a gimmick as the Crowdfarter thing was, the game itself sold maybe 300,000 copies at best.
So how would you try and make it more popular, both on and offline? I'd do the following:
1. Actually advertise the games (and in clever ways). Because let's face it, old school Wario commercials were... interesting:
More of that stuff please. Less 'families dancing around a television like morons while crappy music plays'.
2. Get a good, well known developer to make the next game (ideally a Wario Land title). It should be as close to a 'reboot' as possible, handled by someone like Retro Studios with a lot of credibility and experience and treated as an AAA level game instead of a C level one.
This would get more gaming sites covering the series, would get it more hype at E3 or other events and would generally get more people buying the game when it's out, because Retro or the likes have a much better brand reputation than say... Suzak or GoodFeel.
3. A launch event of some kind. Really, even Yoshi's New Island got a Nintendo World Store event, so it'd be damn nice if the next Wario Land game got one too.
4. Encourage the online community more. If you want a series to have a long standing fanbase, you need to try and get people outside of the odd social media site to care about it and follow the series long term. Nintendo should try and work with sites like this one to achieve that.
So how would you make the Wario series more popular if you were in charge at Nintendo?
