Is Wario more popular outside of Japan?

Was reading about series that sold better outside Japan on TV Tropes, and it listed the earlier Wario games as being much more popular in Western regions than Japan.

So, is the series generally more popular in the English speaking world than Japan? Curious if anyone from the latter can explain the situation there.

From my personal experience Wario is quite popular here in the US
but when I used to live on Mexico (lore drop) Wario was like EXTREMELY popular lol he even became a meme at some point I think..

Huh that's really interesting. It seems like Wario seems to be more popular in certain developing countries/non mainstream gaming markets than in places like the US or Japan.

Most Wario games sold well in Japan and anecdotally, I've come across a number of super-dedicated Japanese wario fans on twitter. It's only really Shake it (which I shake up to the Wii not doing as well there) that has noticeably disproportionate Japan vs overseas ratio.

Here in Mexico, or most likely, Latin America in general, Wario has sorta a meme status... but for the wrong reasons.
(I don't want to go further on the topic, it's basically "lolcow" content.)
