It's fine. I'm a strange Nintendo fan who doesn't care about Nintendo's console's based on success, technical power/capabilities, or unique feature sometimes called a gimmick.
Instead, I care about a system based on what exclusive games, applications, or services are on it. Exclusively. This is what makes a console great to me. So the Switch's ability to be portable never really excited me despite selling so well with everyone else. I actually got into a debate with someone about the greatness of the Switch vs the how "awful" the Wii U was.
In my debate I was a bit irked that people say that the Switch is a million times better than the Wii U ever was. Ever was? In every aspect? First we are comparing a console that just started a little over a year ago vs a console that was around for five years. Based on my own standards of what makes a console great I cannot judge two consoles until their lifetime is over. Although, I acknowledge how one judges a console can be completely different from how other people do it. If your value of what makes a console great is based on success, then yes, the Switch is better console hands down. But by that logic you'd have to acknowledge that the original Wii was Nintendo's greatest home console ever made. Even greater than the Switch.
I'm sure many gamers would hate to say that the Nintendo Wii, a system who's success was based on appealing to non gamers who mostly bought shovelware and used a gimmick that rarely worked, is indeed Nintendo's greatest home console.
Well maybe it's not success alone? Maybe it's success plus a steady stream of games? After all, one of the biggest reasons people consider the Wii U a bad console was due to it's constant dry spells. Well to that I'd say, the original Wii had no dry spells either! With it's constant stream of shovelware there was tons of games to play. "But that doesn't count! It was garbage shovelware." Yes but it satisfied it's core audience. And it worked.
In terms of the Switch, I personally don't think ports of Wii U games I already bought/ old 3rd party games that everyone owns and probably play better on other consoles "count" either. But they satisfy then needs of the owners and fill in the dry spells. And it works.
But what about the indies! Switch has indies. So did the Wii U. Maybe not as many quality indies as the Switch has right now, but they existed. And if you combine the good indies the Wii U had (like Shovel Knight) plus the Virtual Console (which the Switch will not be having) it evens out a little bit.
Add on the fact that the Switch has the most barebones UI, extreme lack of applications, features, and means of communication that don't require you to download a separate phone app? Well it takes the system down quite a few notches for me. Personally.
So when people say that the Switch is a million time better than the Wii U, I'd say: "It's certainly better in some ways. But for what I value in a Nintendo console, I wouldn't say a million."
After all? Why do most people buy a Nintendo console anyway? What can that system offer that a Sony or Microsoft system can't? One thing. Nintendo games. I buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo games. And as long as Nintendo delivers in making great games, I will always buy their consoles and judge them on that.
This may make it sound like I dislike the Switch. No. I like it. But I'd like any Nintendo console if it had quality Nintendo games on it.
