Waluigi confirmed for Mario Tennis Ultra Smash!

Trailers for Dry Bowser, Bowser Jr and Toadette have been released:

According to it's description the Toadette trailer is called "A break from adventuring trailer" which is a neat little Captain Toad Treasure Tracker reference (ya know, "ready for adventure" n'all), but it says a lot when that's one of the most notable things about this game...

Well it's nice to see Toadette showing up in stuff again after disappearing for a few years and the game itself looks nice but it's oh so lacking in content. At this point I'm convinced this is just filler to to hold over Wii U owners while Nintendo gets its next big thing ready.

That's the weirdest character choice ever. Why? Of all the possible characters, why that? Even the others in 3D World would be more interesting...

I don´t get the ¨Waluigi´s whole existence¨ thing.
While he has become a mainstay since then, Waluigi didn't exist at all in any form outside of this pseudo-Waluigi from a Mario manga that came out before Mario Tennis(and even then I'm 100% certain that it wasn't an inspiration, after Wapeach was dropped) :

So really, Waluigi was just as bizzare of an inclusion back then, as all of the other ones that JoeKarta listed.
As for the Sprixie I have seen demand for them to show up in spin offs prior to Mario Kart 8's release, so it's really not that bizzare, just unexpected.

I actually quite like the choice! I dont feel a thing for the character but Ive always thought the spinoff games should have this sort of configuration where they have the main ones stay and then alternate the rest of the characters depending on the generation. You know, how GameCube era had Petey Piranha and King Boo, then Wii gave us Rosalina and Queen Bee? I think thatd keep the roster fresh every time and give an excuse to make a new game. Make it different, not try to make it the ultimate one.

...I mean, itd work if the game itself wasnt so shit or if this wasnt the only new addition along with the ones that have always been there but feel the need to advertise LIKE IF THEY OUTDID THEMSELVES NINTY STOP BEING SO CHEAP

I agree for the most part, thought I think there is a way to keep rosters fresh, while also coming closer to what one would consider the "ultimate" roster.

As an example I'l bring up Mario Golf World Tour, because I think that it has the best roster we had in forever.

You have plenty of returning characters in the form of:
Mario
Luigi
Peach
Daisy
Yoshi
Birdo
Wario
Waluigi
Donkey Kong
Diddy Kong
Boo
Bowser Jr
Bowser

Only Petey, Shadow Mario and Koopa (as well as Neil and Ella if you count the Advance Tour characters) were cut, the newcomers are:
Toad
Toadette
Paratroopa
Rosalina
Kamek
Nabbid
Gold Mario

Each of these characters has something that makes them appealing as Newcomer, Toad despite being a main character, hasn't been playable in a Camelot made sportsgame since 64 Tennis, so that speaks for itself. This is the first appearence of Toadette after 5 years of absence, so she really hasn't been in rosters for a while, Rosalina and Nabbid have never been playable in sports games before, Kamek has only been playable ONCE in a spin off before, despite having been around since 1994, Paratroopa is a bit of a refreshing mixup from the typical Koopa we usually see in spin offs and Gold Mario actually plays differently from the cast, in a way that represents his powerup, making him a really unique character, despite just being just another Mario.

Mind you I do think that Mario Kart could benefit from that kind of alternation, especially with the atrocious clone baggage that it brought onto itself, I welcome a lot of the new characters like Luma in Mario Tennis Open, Nabbid in Mario Golf World Tour and now the Sprixie in Ultra Smash with open arms and would be totally down with those kind of charas taking up larger parts of the future rosters, but I feel that there are plenty of instances where some of the more usual characters are just as good, like Donkey Kong returning to playable status in Mario Party 10.

You might not agree with opinion my opinion on World Tour's roster and that's fine, but I just feel that it knew how to make a compelling roster, (even thought the only new added character from our current generation was Nabbid) especially thanks to it's timing, Rosalina wasn't quite as much of a guranteed inclusion yet, we knew nothing about any other future Toadette appearences (other then Mario Kart 8 ),etc, etc, but it's because of said timing that they still felt fresh, despite being older faces and you can do the same thing with characters like Petey or King Boo, bringing them back to playable status after almost 8 years and having them co-exist with new faces.

...I really hope I'm making sense, my main point is that you can have relativly few new faces, while still keeping the character selection fresh, without abandoning too many charas from previous generations.

With that said your idea is perfectly sound and I really hope I didn't word myself in a way that makes it seem like I'm talking down on it, if I did feel free to call me out on being an asshole.

Oh no, we definitely agree on some points! even if I dont like the selection itself I do think that is the right mentality for rosters. Like I wouldnt have liked Rosalina to disappear or be like a one-time use, there are definitely instances where characters make new additions because they become important parts of the cast, its like a sign of it growing with the years and indeed it can be kept fresh! I just think that its better to have like a pool to choose from when it comes to more minor characters so it doesn't feel like their appearances are simple filler (like Paratroopa up there being THE choice out of all the other Bowser minions is a good example!)

I think one of my favourite examples of what I meant is Mario Kart 7? It kinda got rid of some options people thought were obvious and added some characters like Queen Bee and Flutter who never really have chances to shine. The only thing that bothers me about it is Metal Mario, but the overall feel of it is that its a very surprising roster and I can definitely identify it as being from that game, if that makes sense? Like, the reason Toadette coming back is a big deal to people now is because she has been gone for a while and this is her first Tennis appearance if I'm not mistaken, but if she was always there then getting rid of her wouldn't mean a thing as you're certain she will come back and even then you can still play the games in which she appeared in. What I mean is there's just way too many Mario characters and keeping them all in every new game kinda erases the reason to play older ones; alternating every now and then would help keep every game fresh as well as open up more possibilities for other characters to return or make new appearances.

Maybe the main thing behind it is that Ninty needs to focus on the game itself and build it from there. Ultra Smash here feels like garbage because all the roster compromises are made to focus on the 'comeback' of characters that have always been there and the addition of a single new one that doesn't even make an impact. Taking more risks would definitely help in times like these ;A;

It's the right mentality, but Ultra Smash's problem isn't only the characters, it's the very, very bland game design.

Does this one even have Mario style courts? No? Or Mario style music? No?

That's just boring.

Contrast to Power Tennis, with stuff like this:

That game even bothered to remix Mario themes in 'boss' style:

Review's are coming out today an it turns out the game's online mode is so primitive that it doesn't allow you to play against friends, only random matchups with complete strangers.

This gaem keeps (not) delivering.
