Maybe it's also cause I get overwhelmed by games like Pizza Tower (even if that game still rocks, obviously!) but I feel like "slow" plattformers like the older WL games (especially WL1) work because...
1. The items are kinda essential on Super Hard mode, at least if you don't figure out how to stunlock the bosses with speedrun strats/play near perfectly. But I get what you mean, the money doesn't have that many uses.
