I’ve played the demo earlier today, it’s basically warioware if nintendo locked tf in, it adds so much to gameplay, style, and even the story mode to make it one of the best warioware titles in recent years, and the funniest thing is that it isn’t even a warioware title, it’s an indie “warioware-like”.
Nintendo has been taking a little bit of confidence in
the recent warioware entries, sure we got get it together which was a nice new twist to the series, but move it didn’t have anything new going on, and the motion controls scheme that it tried to rework and borrow from smooth moves didn’t translate well with the switch (in short: the motion controls sucked big time) on top of being surprisingly more short than the last entries (being gold and get it together, that had lots of stuff to do, including the missions, wich there were a lot on both entries) and having the age old story of wario catching up on some bad things and him being brutaled because of some cursed, ancient or magical object is pretty much just getting old at this point.
Maybe i’m being too nitpicky or spoiled but the warioware series has been getting stale and same-y for a while, and that might be because of nintendo having too much confidence on the series, or i guess they release new ones quick and dirty every 2 years to keep our mouths shut about a new warioware entry.
But when i tried mindwave it really caught me, the art style was so alive and charming (especially the abbie starlight stage) that completely blows the last 3 warioware entries out of the water (yes, the art style of mindwave is in my opinion better than ko takeuchi’s latest works on warioware gold, git and move it) not to mention it also takes a spin on how the gameplay and microgames, when you reach a certain score in a game, the game can start throw you ad windows (fictional ads of course, not in-game ads) that cover your screen and that you have to close in order to continue, or even rotate your screen full 180° if you go further, and it feels even snappier and quicker than the last warioware entries, even the “speed up!” warning is quicker, which makes mindwave as fast paced as the older warioware titles, if not more, which is super awesome, and the story is also eons better than the same thing the warioware series has been doing for a while now, considering this new thing of going through your opponent’s “minds” amd reading them to go further the “mindscape tournament” is really fun in concept, and can leave to even getting to see some messed up minds, like maybe some crazed psyco or a depressed suicidal person, you can also interact with your opponents thorugh a lobby called “floors” to get them to know their personalities and how they act and interact with others.
Mind you, this is the demo and i’m writing this like i’m writing a game review, but that’s because mindwave is just that good, like really good even in a demo form, also to mention that the replayability is there (like any warioware title) and it feels great with a shuffle mode already unlocked too
So in concluson, mindwave is incredible, and the devs are doing what nintendon’t, making warioware super cool again.
