I love this Donkey Kong Land art but I can't find it without those bloody details. Official DK Land art is VERY rare since it's such an obscure game. I took this from a 1995 issue of Nintendo Power promoting the game... http://www.superluigibros.com/nintendo-power-74-donkeykong-land
Speaking of renders, I have an archive of old Rareware renders on my PC just in case they ever disappear. Not limited to a few extremely rar-I mean, UNCOMMON renders of Kiddy from some old Japanese bits of DKC3 and DKL3 marketing!
Ah, yes. The mysterious hatted Kong. I often wonder if he wasn't a beta of Swanky. And Ram Bunkshus must have originally been used in place of Rambi in the first cliff level, "Mountain Mayhem".
DKL is a strange game. It employs curious ideas like finding bombs to blow open the map, 'gambling' Kong Tokens at life stations, and giving Kong Letters the vital function of saving progress... or becoming stepping stones in a blimp!
I also love how the Bonus Rooms take you all over the world. You start the game in a world of jungles, snow and shipwrecks, yet there are Bonuses that send you into mysterious cities or underwater ruins. It's all very dream-like.
I wish I knew the complete history of the game. Rare were really trying to squeeze in all the uniqueness they could and make it a great stand-alone title, but it seems they had time or space restraints and dropped a few ideas.
Sorry, I'm getting carried away again. Haha. As you've probably guessed, DKL is to me what DKC3 is to you. A spiritual game.
I was going to say, I still have lots of old images and scans littered all over my computer drives, but I'm missing a vast sea of material lost years ago.
I'd love to see your archive, to know exactly what I'm missing, but I'm not going to intrude.
The PO Box was the postal address for Nintendo Power magazine, I believe. I've got my own copy of the magazine here on my lap, and the PO Box is exactly the same as the online scan I linked to.
Anyway, Reianoid saw it in my icon and made a little joke, but now the Colonel and I have turned his joke into an in-depth conversation. Or rather, I have. Heheh.
Haha! Boy, I feel silly. Never mind, Colonel, maybe one day you'll get to it. It's a brutal hard game with flaws (like no actual ending), but it was very ambitious for GB standards.
I hate the fact most just assume it's a "Game Boy port of DK Country". It's the main reason DKL was overlooked.
Anyway, I'm just glad there's another big Rare/DK fan here to yak with!
