The keyhole locks require a key item hidden in the level. Those are not exits, they contain treasure! The other locks are opened by using a coin. You can get a coin by pressing B while holding Up. You need at least 10 coins in your countr to do it, though.

I DID IT!! I was going crazy trying to figure out what to do! Hahah!

Don't worry, you're not alone. 20 years ago I got stuck in the exact same place. It was Christmas day 1997, and I was stuck at the end of Course 2 with the timer running down!

At the end of Course 1 the pirate shows you how to use Ten-Gold Coins to open the gate. You can also use them at the checkpoints, or as a throwing weapon, but make sure you grab them back quickly!

I had that big coin with a + on it, but I threw it by mistake, now I can't move forward in course 3... What do I do now?

As long as you have at least 10 coins you can always summon a Ten-Gold Coin (the coins with the + on them).

Be careful, though! If you throw them away and waste all your money, you might find yourself too poor to open the skull door at the goal. If that happens and there's no more money in the area, you can either kill yourself, leave the course through the entrance door, or use a cheat to give yourself as much money/time/lives as you want.
