Wario Land 4 heads to Wii U Virtual Console tomorrow...

I can't believe I only heard about this yesterday. I got Stolen Projects to reduce the price of my Wario Land 4 game design book to celebrate the event. I hope that the game will get a bit more attention this second time round. I have the game already, so I won't be picking one up. I hear that...

    Linking the Nintendo games

^You can find more information on the relationship between the F-Zero and Starfox series here. Although the conclusion is a bit of a fail, it's nice how different Nintendo games have references to each other. I'd much rather it stay like this way than be anything like what you see in comics.

The Wario Land 4 Graphics Project

Wow. I didn't recognise some of the backgrounds at first. It's really different seeing them isolated like this.

Poll Best Level from Topaz Passage?

^The final room is pretty genius. If you'd been ignoring the board game, then you have to roll more turns in the post-fold (second half) part of the level. So you have less time to reach the end of the level. They really pull the rug out from under the slackers.

Does anyone else kind of despair at the lack of Wario related info online?

Yeah, I noticed that Mario Wiki wrongly credited EAD. Quite amusing. This is a tough question to answer, cause it's all about taste. Certain games just have that ability to draw people's attention, and I don't think that Wario Land is one of those games. It's a fairly straightforward series. I...

Were there any Wario games you actually thought were disappointing?

I thought Shake It! was pretty poor. It's a looker, but the gameplay challenges don't evolve much and the motion control mechanics were under-utilised. There's too many roadblocks in that game that force you to repeat the level if you miss anything. The folded level design is also quite poor.

Poll Out of all Nintendo's 2D platformer franchises, which one is the best?

Starfy isn't very good at all. Low-level, repetitive challenges and lots of swimming through open spaces. Yoshi's Island DS is a bit of a mess and the new game looks to be much the same. I have only played the first two Kirby games, and they were pretty good. Simple action, but enough variety to...

    Will you buy Tomodachi Life?

I certainly found the Nintendo Direct intriguing, but they didn't talk about much about what you actually do in the game. I might wait for more information to hit and then decide.

Poll Best Level from Topaz Passage?

You guys are kidding, right? Aside from Hotel Horror, Toy Block Tower has the most low-level challenges in the whole game, and they're optional! You can basically walk through the level without engaging with the central theme/idea.

Did anyone else feel Wario Land Shake It was a step backwards?

I know it's shameless self-promotion, but I wrote about Shake It!'s design on my blog last year. http://danielprimed.com/2013/04/wario-land-shake-dimension-mechanics/ http://danielprimed.com/2013/04/wario-land-shake-dimension-enemies-rewards-level-design-and-progression/ Personally, I...

Poll Best Level from Sapphire Passage?

Fiery Cavern by a long shot. It has the most sophisticated form of folded level design in the whole game (new enemies, surfaces, visual theme, remixed level layout, new rooms). The Iwaos (dudes with the boulders) have more back and forth interaction with Wario, so you really feel like you have...

Poll Which developer would you like to develop the next Wario Land?

I'd say leave it to Software Development Group No. 1 . The SPD group are basically the old R&D1 team and they've proven through Wario Land 1-4 that they can make unique and well-designed Wario Land games. Retro Studios are mainly focused on bigger budget home console games, something which I...

How would you make the Wario series more popular?

Some good points. here. I think that Nintendo generally need to do more to promote games beyond their core line-up. Art Style series, Pilotwings, DK King of Swing series, etc. They have plenty of means to highlight such games now, especially with Nintendo Direct. Makes no sense to me.

Does Wario Ware need a gimmick?

"Isn't it just as much fun to just play good ol' microgames with good ol' button controls like the first game?" Yes, but why would you want to play another WarioWare that's just like the first game? It's the gimmicks that have made each of the WarioWare games unique and different from each...

Where should the Wario Land series go from here?

Probably something completely different again. The Wario Land series has always been on the front foot with adapting to different types of design: Wario Land - Remixing Mario platforming by removing acceleration and focusing on dynamic enemy interacitons (picking up and throwing enemies etc.)...

Poll Hardest Wario Land 4 Boss?

Cractus. As I was saying in another thread, as he closes in on you, you have less time to dodge and respond to his attacks. Initially this isn't a problem as he floats along the ground, but the further you get through the battle, the higher he floats and thus the hands have a better range to hit...

Easiest and most difficult Wario Land bosses?

I remember having trouble with Scumflower and having to look up a FAQ and then watch a video. Otherwise Cractus from Wario Land 4 is quite a challenging boss. If you don't take advantage of his cool down animation to land multiple hits in one go, then he can be quite troublesome. I found it...

    Hi there

^Go for it. The draft pieces that I had up on my site some years ago are pretty unpolished compared to the final copy, which I spent about a year editing and rewriting. Let me know how you find it. :)

Poll Is Wario Land 1 underrated?

The premise of this topic is a bit too openended. I think we need a bit more context. i.e. relative to what? Let's assume that we're not talking about sales. Relative to other GameBoy games, Wario Land is probably not underrated. In terms of "gaming history", it's possibly underrated, but then...
