Well, just saw this topic on Reddit about it:

As well as this picture of an ominous looking shadow:

And it made me wonder whether it's actually a ghost/easter egg of some kind. Or is it just a lighting glitch involving an enemy on the next floor up?

What do you think?
 
That looks more like a chandelier. Can't remember if there's one in that particular room, but there is one hanging in the entrance room just next door, and that shadow reminds me of it.
Also, sometimes you can actually see the shadow of the Ankiron (bomb turtle dude) in the room above.
 
I know a lot about the inside and outs of this game.

What you are seeing is the shadow of the enemy on the above floor. Shadows were lazily made in this game, there's many places in the game that can confirm this. The enemy in question we are seeing here is that turtle thing with the canons.

Even Wario's shadow will display below him even if he's standing on a platform. (As in, his shadow will display on the floor under the platform he stands on for whatever reason).

Edit: Yeah someone already beat me to it, it's that Ankiron enemy.
