Is Mario in a dark age?

As a Mario fan, I never saw a "dark age" of Mario. Sure, Sticker Star wasn't the best but it was still playable, if you were brand new to Paper Mario and started off with SS you wouldn't complain.
Color Splash was in my opinion a big step up from SS, it kind of played the same though it was handled much better, there were some big flaws like getting your cards turned into the same thing against a flying enemy, no story, battle system, etc but it was still playable and the game has gotten its Paper Mario charm.
NSMB series is okay, very fun to play with friends or even on your own, sure it's almost like the same game every series but there's always something new, plus it's still pretty fun to play. Oh, I haven't played Yoshi's new Island, but I hear it's trash, lol.

When was the last time we were this excited for a Mario game? Galaxy?
I was excited for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Come to think of it. Many people consider it the Mario dark age (unless Odyssey fixes that). I can't help but to think that this speaks VERY highly of the series. Except for Mario Party fans.
