Naturally it makes sense to take advantage of the opportunity and have a game tie in with the movie sooner rather than later. But what surprises me is that there were TWO games. Also development for the first movie and Princess Peach Showtime began around the same time, so they made Peach more energetic in the movie, and it feels very Nintendo to represent whatever the most current game is.

Here's what Miyamoto had to say:
“I don’t decide everything about the lineup, but we did discuss that ‘we have an idea to include Fox in the script for the movie (‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’), so we definitely want a new Star Fox game.’
Sometimes things get decided after we’ve discussed them. We started working on the first Mario movie (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) and Princess Peach Showtime around the same time, and we talked about things like, ‘If we have this game, shouldn’t Peach be more energetic in the movie too?’ It was decided early on that Yoshi would appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, so we decided to make a Yoshi game, and that’s how development of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book began.
It’s a case-by-case situation, but I think we’ll continue to maintain a good relationship between games and other developments.”
I heard somebody make a good point, where StarFox may have been a remake because it was an impulse decision and Nintendo needed something quick, I guess that'd probably explain the Direct and eventually the game shadowdropping out of nowhere too
OOT is also getting a remake, and The Legend of Zelda movie is set to release 2027. The first Mario Movie released in 2023, and the second in 2026. I wonder if we'll see the third one in 2028 when the Wario Land trademark is up for renewal, or maybe if that's a bit early then 2029?
Miyamoto on how Nintendo chooses which games to release, confirms Star Fox and Yoshi games happened because of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Famitsu published a new interview with Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto this week, and one topic of discussion was the company’s software lineup. The Japanese brought up different games that have released on Nintendo Switch 2 so far such as the first 3D Donkey Kong game in almost three decades...
