Musician and guitarist for King Crimson, Robert Fripp in a recording studio with equipment.
Well, theres a difference with loving someone and accepting what they do. Alot of people kinda seem to wanna mix these two things together, but not believing that living in a certain way is the right thing to do is not the same as hating someone, its just not being supportive of an action. (I deal with that issue and I can say that I dont feel hated on because there are those who dont think its the right way to go : p )
But this isnt a debate on ethics : p
And I only listened to the first six minutes of that album, but its definitely totally different, yeah : p I can definitely see the difference between Peter and Phil's influence, its neat to hear it, actually. Its even kinda surprising to hear it, like after hearing the stuff with Phil I kinda cant believe the group could play like that beforehand haha. I kinda liked it though, I think Id like Peters time as the lead over Phils. But dunno, would have to hear more.
Yeah it's totally fine couldn't find segment pieces since the older prog songs are quite long especially " supper's ready " which is over 20 minutes, yeah just listen to the first 6 minutes and you can definitely hear a huge difference. Both leads I feel worked great for what they were especially since they both sound near identical with their vocals anyway. The group before is definitely different for sure, they've also had a lot of help from various other musicians too that shift in changes like Steve Hackett, Tony Banks, Robert Fripp even.
There isn't a right or wrong way to love some one I guess it all depends who the person is yeah just clearing up what " jesus he knows me " means as best as I could hah, definitely don't want to turn it into some sort of religious debate. You're right it just depends on the person and conditioned love.
And haha, yeah prog seems to do that sometimes : p Im not against long songs or anything, but sometimes it can feel kinda pointless and even annoying. At least like, when the song feels like a 20 minute improv jam. I like listening to people play and all, but I mean with something like that, its definitely something youll listen to once but not regularly, at least for me. Its neat to see at the time but when Im in the mood for a song I wont be listening to an improv jam : p
I can totally get into like long songs, even instrumental songs with no singing (I sometimes prefer that with bands like Mogwai) But there has to be like some kinda hook or pattern for me, to keep that fluid motion that I like with music.
That probly makes me sound like I hate prog rock, which I dont : p Btw does Kansas count as prog?
Understandable stuff like Tarkus sounds nice to listen to once in a while but I can see people just not wanting to sit down to listen to a 20 or even 30 minute long piece even stuff like Atom Heart Father, it might be too much for certain people. When it's just instrumental is alright but imagine if some one actually made a song that's nothing but 10 minute vocals it's been done before but it's usually rare for that to happen. Mogwai is a good alternative if you dig the pattern of the change in shift in songs.
Also yeah Kansas counts as prog rock a lot of early Kansas was prog rock and then they became a more rock, like carry on my wayward son there'll be peace when you're gone.
Also don't worry about the change I kind of wanted to let other people post music there without seeing my long responses hah this is more appropriate for that if it's ok, sorry if the change confused you.
Haha, no I wasnt upset, was the right thing to do actually : p wasnt really the right thread for us to have such long discussions : p I just wasnt aware it was a different thread and was a bit confused when I realized it : p
And I havent listened to that album actually. And the length wouldnt bother me so much, though it can be harder to listen to a longer song over the standard like 3 minutes. Cuz alot of people listen to music while their doing something. Like I like to listen to it while I walk to work. I have about an hour walk but like if I started a long song when Im like a few blocks from work, Im gonna have to stop halfway through which is never good : p At the very least shorter songs are more convenient : p
Its more of just the style for me, I like that fluid motion with music, it keeps you going. So like that kinda music thats all over the place can be hard to grasp. That was my issue with Yes, I liked that song you showed with the cool rocking bass, but Ive heard some of their songs that felt too busy, and I could get into it : p
And yeah I always thought Kansas was prog. I mean maybe a more poppy version of prog, but it felt that way to me.
Glad to hear you weren't and yes it's just better to move the long discussions here infact I forgot this thread existed till earlier hah. Standard 3-4 minute songs are most of what a lot of people can handle and of course it's not bad cause I generally like those kinds of songs too. For longer songs you just gotta be in the mood for it. The fluid motion does help especially when you're on your way to work that walk with music combo is the best honestly. Yes has more unconventional songs, I'm glad you enjoyed it but it isn't for everyone especially if the change in pitch or style could make it a bit hard to follow through.
Same here and you'll be glad to know they do count as prog, though like genesis it's a more poppish prog than folktale prog like king crimson.
And yeah, I can understand when people complain tht others only listen to short songs, cuz it takes away opportunities for longer songs, so I get that. But at the same time I understand songs being around like 3-4 minutes too. I can like it both ways there : p Short and quick songs are convienent, and putting them all together in one album still gives you the long playthrough where you can sit back and close your eyes and get lost in the sound. But I can enjoy long songs too, if it catches my interest.
And haha yeah! I love walking to music actually : p And not to keep bringing up the same topic but Pinback is really good for that : p I also like Sigur Ros for walking too. That flowing sound really makes walking more fun : p I also like have a recliner in my bed room, and I used to really enjoy closing my eyes with my headphones on and rocking in it while listening to music : p Havent done that in a while though : p
How do you like to listen to music, btw? Do you double task while you do it? Like listen to music while doing regular stuff? Or do you listen to it exclusively, doing nothing else that could take your attention from it?
And haha, well it usually depends on the busy-ness of the sound : p Like if theres too many notes going or melody changes I can lose attention : p And haha yeah actually, I generally associate prog with nerd culture, tbh : p And bands like Rush, too : p I often picture like nerds in a dark basement playing D&D or whatever : p
I like that thing with Byrne and Eno, I like the static electronica stuff mixed in with the melody. I love that kinda stuff when its light and done right, haha : p But the melody sounds familiar, like Ive heard it in a different song before. Dunno. Is good though. Whos singing btw?
And haha, I almost always listen to music on headphones : p Partially because I think other people would hate to hear my music, but also because I like feeling surrounded by the sound : p I do often wish I had a friend to listen to music with, though! Like one of my favorite things to do is listen to music and talk about sit. Id like a friend whos totally willing to do that together, and like take turns with songs : p
And you like Sigur Ros? Haha wow awesome, Im a huge fan. And haha Ive never played D&D, I can just imagine like The Trees by Rush playing in the background haha : p
So, I finally really checked out Zach Smiths 3rd band, Three Mile Pilot. Turns out they go s far back as the esarly 90s, back in the time of grungy angsty junk : p So they totally have that kinda music, haha : p But, its all done by Zach and his bass, and I actually really really like it, am like obsessed with it atm : p Its totally unlike his usual style, its all dark and grungy and emotional, its way cool though. I love it, haha : p
The person singing is David Byrne the lead singer of Talking Heads as well. His voice is so cartoony I love it. Yeah the 80s synth sound is really well done especially in this album. Headphones especially work well if you're on a laptop like myself. The stereo sound really aids certain instruments to be more heard than with just a speaker if you were to have it played outloud. It'd honestly be really fun to actually enjoy music with a friend, just sitting in a room having some album playing and you two would be able to discuss it. I'd love to have some one like that out here too.
Sigur Ros is good yeah i like them, glad you also enjoy them. D&D never played it either I just joked about it wanting to make a character trogdor the dwarffister(it's an inside joke) hah but the whole music and nerd culture do fit like a glove. Rush would be the perfect band to even play D&D with since they have some rather lively and sometimes easy going music. Dark and grungy? man that last of the 3 bands being set in the early 90s probably did a shift change since during that time grunge was all the rage. Especially if you look at bands during the time The Pixies, The Strokes, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, grunge was very popular so zach smith probably wanted to go that route as well. Also this song really makes me think of 80s king crimson and even animal collective really good.
Haha yeah, would like to find a friend like that, too. I have one irl friend, but geeesh, I dont like sharing anything with him. Hes so freaking critical, and lately just claims everything is ripping off Sonic Youth >.>
And yeah, the first song I heard by them was a song called ummm Glosoli? From their Takk album. I loved that build up ending, and have gotten four of their albums since then : p And yeah, nerd cutlure defenitly has its own music stylings : p Can be really cheesy sometimes too : p And yeah Rush is like THE nerd band : p I like them, though. My friend and I often get into them from time to time.
Haha, yeah Im guessing the started off that way, they have an album before that one, and its all bass drums and vocals, and its really low tone and dark too. Is way neat. And ah I love both The Pixies and Nirvana, they were both great. My favorite Pixies song ever is Caribou : p I have listened to that song too many times : p
I actually got into them from the ending of the film Fight Club, I heard that song at the end and thought it was the greatest, and went on a search to find it, haha : p
And haha that makes you think of Animal Collective? Ive only actually heard a few of their songs now but I really really like them. If they have stuff like that then Id like to hear more : p
