Puyo Puyo

Sorry about some of my responses, I'm gotten rusty on my Puyo knowledge and my interest right now is at a pretty low point.

I've never really thought much about it but I kind of feel like I need to go through some of the Madou games more before I can really cast a judgement.

Oh, it's OK. Honestly, if THAT'S the case, then I take it that you would have a difficult time telling me whether or not THIS is real?

That's cool, glad to see that my assumption of SEGA being done with adding familiar characters was wrong.

Also heyah.

Welcome back, pal!

Also, looks like THIS post just might be relevant again...

BTW, is it weird that the addition of Black Kikimora suddenly gives me hope for the likes of characters like Choppun?

As of now Quest is still missing the following mainline/Nazo Characters:

OPP & TSU
Sukiyapodes, Zombie, Mini Zombie, Nomi, Dragon

These surprise me the most in their absence, due to TSU's popularity and influence, I mean it's a big enough deal to the point that even we got several versions of it, with the Neo Geo Pocket, N-Gage, Wii Virtual Console and 3D Classics Collection, so you'd think that they'd add the whole cast from the game into Quest, because of TSU's nostalgic appeal in Japan.

SUN
Choppun

We've gone over him before, if the crossdressing is the problem then Choppun is screwed, since that's pretty much his entire character, though your cosplay idea would be a very fun way to reinvent him.

BOX
Merrow, Doppelganger Schezo, Dark Witch, Black Kikimora

For a long time I figured that because of the regular versions of the characters getting alts already, most of the doppelgangers were left out to avoid redundancy, with Doppel.Arle, Strange Klug and Dark Arle only getting a pass since they were too important to their respective games to leave out, I also linked it to the fact that Doppel and Strange Klug never received any alts, despite them being very popular characters whose alts people would totally play for.

Well, since then Dark Arle and Strange Klug (Still no love for Doppel though...) have gotten alts, shooting that theory into the foot, so yeah I got no clue, same goes for Merrow's situation.

PP7

Skeleton-T's two buddies

These two only really existed to serve as Skel's ''transformations'', not even getting names to themselves, so I don't blame SEGA for leaving them out, since they were barely anything to begin with.

Chronicle
Rafisol

We've gone over her as well, it makes sense to wait with adding her for spoiler reasons, but one of these days she really should show up.

Nazo
Billy Burn, Water Element, Barbegazi, Vampire, Wraith

Getting any Nazo Puyo character was a big enough surprise, so yah know, don't know what to tell yah.

While I'm not sure whether or not any of them are going to make it in, I'd certainly be up for it, especially with the surprising inclusion of the Tetris crew Quest could very much end up as the definitive Puyo reunion game and we are so close to having all main/Nazo characters already, but that's something fans would care for more then SEGA.

Time to springboard outta here!

NOOO! Please don't go! I really did enjoy your company, you know!

Ain't nothin' odd bout it, I mean after this I myself feel more inclined to say it might happen.

I know, right? I mean, if SEGA would be willing to add someone as obscure as Black Kiki, I'm feeling more confident in Choppun's chances. I mean, I guess I won't go overboard and say Water Element (though I AM still hoping for her), but this is pretty exciting!

Well, I'll see what happens. I did mention before I'm not really in a puyo mood as of late.

Personally, I really want to see Gay again
u8la9QU.png

Oh, true. Well, I hope you get in the mood again. *Insert Schezo-ism here*

As for Gay, I'd actually like to see how he'd translate into the Puyo series today. Then again, we already have Oshare Bones. So Gay can't be THAT big of a stretch, right?

Well the series is still pretty much made for Japanese audiences and in Japan for better or for worse isn't all that progressive with homosexuality as in the West.

All I want for the series is to be less stale again in it's story telling, the current focus on A Trio VS the world, Satan and Ecolo also play some part + some new world and everyone else is just kind of there, honestly isn't much more interesting then Bowser kidnaping Peach, Chronicle in particular bothers me, because it got to a point where even Ally was largely sidelined, if it wasn't for Rafisol the story would have had nothing to it that we haven't seen before and even then Ecolo being responsible for her creation still plays into the same stale formula.

I guess that's also a reason why most character dynamics SEGA likes to focus on don't interest me that much anymore, since they don't evolve at all, unlike 15h Anni. where I felt like there was some growth in relationships between games, particulary with Sig.

Not that I mind consistend relationships, but given the choice I'd rather see a return of the Schezo/Lagnus rivalry that we haven't seen in forever VS the stale Arle/Schezo dynamic, which comes up every game and ticks off the same bullet points every time.

Wait, how exactly do you mean that Japan is not progressive with homosexuality? Just curious.

You and me both. Honestly, I've been re-watching a few cutscenes of Chronicles and I have to admit, if not for you pointing it out, I wouldn't have noticed (due to the game being entirely in Japanese) that Ally was (for the most part) sidelined, despite being advertised as the game's deuteragonist and passed up for Amitie and Ringo, who for the most part, didn't have much to do with the game's story anyways.

Man, this formula really IS getting old fast...

You know what's interesting? Recently, I've seen a number of Tumblr posts on that Puyo and Madou Confessions blog state that they'd also like to see a Puyo game with the "dark undertones" of Yo~n, or at the very least, use the anime artstyle that it used.

I guess that's also a reason why most character dynamics SEGA likes to focus on don't interest me that much anymore, since they don't evolve at all, unlike 15h Anni. where I felt like there was some growth in relationships between games, particularly with Sig.

That also bothers me too, considering how Draco's relationship with Rider STILL feels somewhat ambiguous to me in comparison to the one she has with Satan, Ringo doesn't extensively interact with anyone outside of the 'A' Trio and her friends, not to mention (as I've mentioned multiple times) Risukuma and Maguro's relationships to the cast outside of the 'A' Trio, Arle barely interacting with the Fever-era cast outside of Amitie, Lemres, and Ms. Accord, the explanation to the existence of characters such as Red Ami, Black Sig, White Feli, etc.

I mean, character relationships and personalities in general just feel SO static, it's not funny.

Not that I mind consistent relationships, but given the choice I'd rather see a return of the Schezo/Lagnus rivalry that we haven't seen in forever VS the stale Arle/Schezo dynamic, which comes up every game and ticks off the same bullet points every time.

It REALLY bothered the heck out of me how Schezo/Lagnus was never ONCE brought up in Chronicles. I mean, I glad they had Lagnus finally interact with the likes of Satan and Rulue, but it still shocked me how every cutscene involving Lagnus never had Schezo in it.

While I have seen them, I'm not talking about having dark elements again, because PP7 could be seen as an example of SEGA trying to be darker and I still find that game's story absolutely terrible. I just want the series' stories to not feel so samey anmyore.
In terms of tone I'd be fine with them going into the type of tone that your average Mario RPG tends to have, plus points if the writing iends up as witty as them well.

I still like the characters and while the gameplay is mostly fine aside from Sonic Team's sloppy attempts at new modes and also while the Western fanbase lost its shit over getting a game localized, the lack of any sort of compelling storyline whether serious or silly and significant character interaction has made me start to sort of lose my love for the series.

@puyokid homosexuality is basically mocked in a lot of things and most homosexual characters in things are typically gag characters.

Ah, I see. Well, I suppose it does explain the likes of characters like Oshare Bones and Gay.

First of all, I'd like to say that if nothing else, I'm in the camp that would (at the very least) want future Puyo games to use Yo~n's artstyle.

Yeah, I see what you're getting at. Honestly, I was a little tired, so I didn't really make clear what I wanted to make clear last night.

Basically, I'd like a Puyo game where:

- Satan and Ecolo's powers are nullified, so as to find a new solution that ISN'T "Deus ex Machina at its finest".

- UNIQUE character interactions are brought more to the forefront like they were in the Compile-era games/15th/20th

- Character interactions ALREADY established should be more fleshed out (like Arle/Sig, Draco and Satan/Rider, Rulue/Raffine, etc.)

- Character interactions/personalities from the Compile-era/15th should return to the forefront.

- Bring back more of the Madou-era and Fever-era casts that haven't been seen for a while/were dropped after 2-3 games.

- The 'A' Trio/Quartet...to NOT be a thing anymore. SEGA needs to find a new way to utilize Arle, Amitie, Ringo, Ally, and Carbuncle rather than just in that manner.

- The explanation to the existence of characters such as Red Ami, Black Sig, White Feli, etc. (I don't consider this a HUGE priority, but I really feel like SEGA intended to do SOMETHING with these guys. ESPECIALLY Red Ami and Black Sig.)

- REMOVE THE 24-CHARACTER LIMIT. Seriously, it's nothing more than a (bad) attempt at a Japanese pun.

I mean, I'm certainly aware of how SEGA seems to have TRIED to make PP7 a "serious" story, and we can all agree that it kind of fell flat on its face with that, both in terms of gameplay AND story "cohesion".

Still though...I'd actually like for SEGA to give it at least one more go at a serious story. As crazy as it sounds, I feel like they could make it work if they actually put in real effort, rather than just making a cash-grab game.

I still love the characters myself and every game still has enough things that I enjoy to keep my interest in the story/characters side of things going (even PP7, despite my dislike for that game's story), I just think that the series' story telling could very well be more then it is now and really want it to step out of it's comfort zone again and in many ways that's a special kind of frustrating.

The treatment of my favorite character doesn't help, I still love Sig to death, but me and SEGA clearly don't agree on which aspects of his character we care about, I want to see his demon nature explored, more of his relationships with Ocean Prince and Arle (the ones I have the most investment in) or team him up with people he hasn't been seen yet, give the Sig VS Strange Klug concept an actual payoff and don't have bugs and Amitie rule his character anymore.

If no one here minds, I'd like to post a quote from an earlier post I made:

Puyo Puyo may be a puzzle game, but let's be honest. For a series of puzzle games, once you combine the likes of Compile's Puyo/Madou content and SEGA's Puyo content all into one entity. you have an unusually large amount of raw potential to do WAY more in terms of its story, character backgrounds, and various settings than they're currently working at, don't you think?

I mean, you could even do some pretty memorable stuff with the cast of PP7 of all people, like give them even MORE unusual character backstories and those guys are essentially just..."normal" high schoolers (bar Ecolo obviously, who is already a VERY mysterious entity in and of itself already) hailing from the "real world" (by Puyo/Madou standards). Heck, this is a puzzle game series that was initially spun-off from (IMO) one of the DARKEST JRPGs I've ever had the..."fortune" of being aware of.

Just like you, I hold this series in (admittedly) surprisingly HIGH regard (for a puzzle game) because it has the potential to do (and be) SO much more than what they're currently settling on.

Yeah, this pretty much sums up how I feel about the Puyo series in recent years.

This is also how I feel about the likes of characters like Risukuma, Maguro, and even a number of Madou-era and Fever-era characters (Sig DEFINITELY included).

I mean...

We still don't know a THING about the living mysteries that are Ecolo, Popoi, and Ms. Accord.

A majority of the Madou-era cast has been flanderized to an uncomfortable extent. (i.e. Arle isn't all that "distinctive" as a protagonist compared to Amitie and Ringo these days, Satan's obsession over Arle and Carbuncle, Rulue's obsession over Satan, Schezo being treated as nothing BUT a Butt-Monkey with barely an awesome moment to his name, Draco's dizty nature extended to her playstyle, etc.)

The Fever-era cast doesn't seem like they're going anywhere with their characterization anymore. (i.e. Amitie doesn't seem any closer to being "the world's greatest magician than she did in Fever 1, Raffine, Klug, Lemres, and Feli just feel like they're...there these days, Tarutaru feels like he had some potential had he been kept around the main cast, Rider is STILL insecure about her horns, and Sig...well, you covered all the finer points, and so on.)

The cast of PP7 COULD have more better ties to the rest of the cast than just the 'A' Trio, but SEGA still seems adamant on keeping things tied to them only. 20th Anniversary seemed to try having them interact with others outside of the 'A' Trio, but I can't really tell if it worked as well as 15th did (You know, due to not being able to read Japanese and all).
