Puyo Puyo

I wish I could speak Japanese or something. The current producer of the series (Mizuki Hosoyamada) has his own Twitter, and I'm pretty sure he takes questions. I think I've said this before, but I'm quite a bit surprised no one's bothered to ask him (or anyone who works on the current SEGA-era Puyo games) whether or not characters like Succubus or Lamia truly are are the same person as the Madou-era design.
Depends on what kind of questions he is allowed to answer, I'd imagine that SEGA would have some rules on what can be talked about and answered and what not.

Personally, I consider them ALL to be the Doppel. Arle we have today. Even if they're not ALL the same character, I definitely consider "Warle" and Final Exam Doppel to be one and the same. That is, if F.E. Doppel isn't just the lingering spirit of Arle's ancestor, Lilith like I've been hearing about lately.
lilith is something that was introduced in the Shin Madou novel series and Final Test does take SOME cues from it (it's likely also why Lala makes an appearence as an NPC), but whether or not the game makes a reference to that idea is something I don't know, thanks to my amazing lack of japanese knowledge, though I would prefer it not being the case.

Yeeeaahh...the fact that Doppel's been seen as a mook on occasion is what throws a wrench into things for me as well. Also, WITCH appeared in SCHEZO'S story in Madou ARS?? Yeah, I'm taking these mook appearances with a grain of salt. Now, Succubus and Incubus I can understand, what with them being demons who barely look their actual age and all, but Witch appearing in Schezo's story is sort of where I'm going to have to draw the line. Heck, she's not even the only one with this issue. I'm pretty sure Suketoudara and Draco have these kind of appearances as well.
It is important to note that ARS came out in 1993, before TSU and it wouldn't be until that game's success that the idea of the Madou mooks as individuals like in Puyo, would slowly be integrated into the MM series, so some oddities were to be expected, by the time of the Saturn game there were more Puyo charas as individuals then Puyo charas as mooks, which was for the better if you ask me.

Actually, you know what would be even better? Doppel. Arle getting an alt. that references her Final Exam appearance. Basically, she'd wear purple armor rather than red armor, gain Arle's magic bo staff, and she'd have an overall more menacing demeanor and appearance. Well, maybe not menacing, but moreso sickeningly smug.
Actually it's funny you bring up her armor in Final Test, because BOX does something rather interesting with Doppel's appearence :
Darlebox1.png

There are two versions of her, one with her YON armor and one with a variation of Arle's usual outfit, but in either case both are purple like her Final Test appearence. I like to think of it as a subtle hint towards them being the same Doppel.

Yeah, I have to agree with you there. I'm not going to lie, what with Rafisol's overall existence in the series, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't just a teensy-weensy bit worried about what this would mean for D. Arle in terms of the mainstream games' future.
I'm not too concerned that Rafisol will be an obstacle for Doppel in later games, given that Raf might very well end up not getting much in terms of future appearences herself, which would also be lame.

BTW, speaking of Succubus earlier, I don't suppose you saw the fanart I posted earlier today/last night on Tumblr, did you? I don't mean to sound smug and/or needy or anything like that, but I kind of thought that post would pick up a bit more steam. If I could get a reblog or something, it'd be appreciated.
Ah, no I haven't seen that one, pretty cute and don't let it discourage you if doesn't get much attention, that just happens sometimes.

Speaking of cute fan art, I just came across this, I know you aren't a fan of the ship (I don't mean that in a negative tone for the record, it's just not a fave of yours), but can I just spend a moment gushing over how utterly precious it is? Because frankly I'm swooning over the sheer cuteness of it.

Still, I wonder if SEGA would really care about Hosoyamada answering questions that relate to Quest...

Oh, really? Well, I guess that actually makes more sense. Wait, was Lala even in the Shin Madou LNs?

Oh, so characters like Suketoudara, Draco, Witch, Succubus, Incubus, and the like were being treated like random encounter enemies prior to Tsu and onward, because at the time, they really WERE nothing more than, well...random encounter enemies.

Oh, wow! You have a point there! This whole time, I was simply under the impression that Compile totally botched Doppelganger Arle's color scheme. Which, at the time, confused me even MORE considering Yo~n was quite literally released just one year before BOX, which was her very next appearance in a big-budget Puyo game.

I'm not too concerned that Rafisol will be an obstacle for Doppel in later games, given that Raf might very well end up not getting much in terms of future appearances herself, which would also be lame.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I REALLY don't want SEGA to just drop Ally and Rafisol, but I'm just a little worried that Doppel might not get the character development that Compile was hinting to her getting.

Ah, no I haven't seen that one, pretty cute and don't let it discourage you if doesn't get much attention, that just happens sometimes.

Yeah, I figured I'd post it as a little joke as to how Succubus is usually portrayed by the Puyo and Madou games. Personally, this is one of many fanart pieces I've come across recently which actually give Succubus a more cuter, almost INNOCENT vibe to her. The fanart piece above being one of the more primary examples. Also, thanks for the words of wisdom about Tumblr. I do appreciate it.

Actually, on the contrary. While I'm admittedly not a HUGE advocate of Arle x Sig, that piece IS undeniably adorable.

Depends, some companies are more tight lipped then others, no clue where SEGA falls under.

Oh, really? Well, I guess that actually makes more sense. Wait, was Lala even in the Shin Madou LNs?
I know for a fact that Camus is in the novels and I keep hearing that Lala is as well, I can't confirm it though.

Well, the Puyo site of things always had them as individuals, it just wasn't until Tsu's success when the Madou games slowly started to roll with that idea as well.

I get what you mean, but as I said in the past I think Doppel offers so much that could make her character arc distinct from Raf's that I'm personally not all that worried.

On that note I want to give a bit of a general shout out to the artist, because he/she has drawn quite a bit of Puyo stuff, with a particulary heavy focus on mah boy and all of it is wonderful :

Hmm...well, considering SEGA's more loose stance on this kind of thing (ESPECIALLY in comparison to Nintendo), I'd like to believe they wouldn't mind too much.

Oh, OK. Well, maybe I'll come across it first, and I'll inform you, huh?

Speaking of which, does anyone know if the Madou LNs were self-contained stories (like the majority of the Puyo LNs we have today) or were they all part of some over-arching plot?

Well, the Puyo side of things always had them as individuals, it just wasn't until Tsu's success when the Madou games slowly started to roll with that idea as well.

Oh, I see. So basically, I put it the other way around in my last post about this, huh? Makes sense.

I get what you mean, but as I said in the past I think Doppel offers so much that could make her character arc distinct from Raf's that I'm personally not all that worried.

Well (as you've seen in my Tumblr), for now I'm just hoping SEGA even BOTHERS to bring her (Doppelganger Arle) back for a mainstream game whatsoever.

Wow, these are just adorable! Big props to the artist who made these cute gems!

BTW, speaking of a notable focus on everyone's favorite bug lover, who here thinks the Western Puyo fandom seems to have fallen in love with Sig at this point? I mean, I'm seeing at least one Tumblr post about him almost every day.

Speaking of which, I still hope my Strange Sig/Strange Witch game could become a reality one day.

I know that they follow a distinct timeline, whether or not the plots connect though is something I'm clueless about, my knowledge of Shin Madou is very limited in general, due to how little translated information for it exists.

A sentiment that I very much share.

I actually noticed that as early as when western PPT was first released, particulary on Twitter, where many have responded extremely positively towards him and even before that Sig always got tons of love from the western fandom and that's not even going into the japanese site of thing.

Truth to be told I don't think I'm leaning myself out of the window when I say that Sig may very well be the most beloved SEGA created Puyo character and with him being my personal favorite as well I can very much site with the sheer amount of attention he get's from the fandom.

From what I've heard, the Shin Madou LNs go more into detail on subjects like Arle from childhood to teenage years, Rulue studying martial arts (as well as going into SOME detail on her home life), and Schezo's life following the acquisition of his dark powers.

OK, I thought it was my imagination or something. Don't get me wrong, I can believe Sig being beloved in ALL corners of the fandom. I just wanted to confirm it.

And you're not the only one on the Sig fan bandwagon! I LOVE Sig, and I hope to see even MORE of his "bombastic" personality in Puyo Chronicles' Western localzation.

BTW, I should mention that when you mentioned how Sig seems to be the most beloved SEGA-created Puyo character, I figured I should bring up that in terms of COMPILE-created Puyo characters, the West seems particularly fond of Arle, Schezo, and (believe it or not) Draco.

Count me in the Sig bandwagon. It just goes to show you can write characters that are very neutral and still get a very enjoyable character!

I came around Fever 2 era and I've loved Sig since~

As for the Madou character fan favorites. I'm honestly on the Arle, Schezo, and Draco boat as well. Though I also like Camus a lot despite... We haven't seen him for a very long time rip Camus my boy I'll always love you.

Also pardon me for butting in.

I also know that Lagnus fights Runelord in Shin Madou, in fact it's him who seals the original dark wizard away to begin with, no clue how that fits into the timeline though.

Sounds about right, though I'd say Carbuncle is also worth a mention.

Oh, Camus is great, easily one of my favorite Madou exclusives, it actually really does bum me out that SEGA can't bring him back.

See what I mean? Normally, I'd imagine that most people don't have much attachment to neutral characters, but something about Sig just makes that work, you know?

As for the Madou character fan favorites. I'm honestly on the Arle, Schezo, and Draco boat as well.

As for the Madou character fan-favorites, I should have also mentioned that they became even BIGGER fan-favorites following Puyo Tetris' release in the West.

Specifically, Arle was mostly because she's the series' first main protagonist, Schezo for his "unique" speech impediment, and (again, interestingly) Draco due to her claims of being really cute, and everyone who plays Puyo Tetris posts something about her claiming that Puyo Puyo has a cute human-dragon hybrid character.

Still though, you know what's REALLY funny? The Madou-era fan-favorite Puyo characters were the main protagonists of Puyo SUN!

Sounds about right, though I'd say Carbuncle is also worth a mention.

Oh, right! How could I forget about Carbuncle? Honestly, I think I only forgot about the little guy because I haven't seen much stuff about him. For heaven knows what reason...

I also know that Lagnus fights Runelord in Shin Madou, in fact it's him who seals the original dark wizard away to begin with, no clue how that fits into the timeline though.

Oh, yeah. I read somewhere that that happens almost 1000 years or so BEFORE the likes of Schezo even existed.

Though I also like Camus a lot despite... We haven't seen him for a very long time rip Camus my boy I'll always love you.

Yeah, I still feel pretty bad for the likes of characters like Camus and Lala. From what I've heard, it seems that we might not want to hold our breath much for either of them appearing in a Puyo game these days. Legal issues and whatnot, don't you know.

Also pardon me for butting in.

And don't worry, you're not butting in to anything, so no need to feel uncomfortable.

Ah yeah, didn't notice that before.

By the by, since we were talking about Sig earlier, I use tags on my blog for the sake of easily finding content, but some tags are so full now that it's not really helpful anymore, especially the Sig tag, so I went and made a seperate blog dedicated to him, where I reblog and archive posts from my blog that concern him:
https://mysigblog.tumblr.com/

It's more of a personal thing, since it will make it easier for me to sort out whatever post I might happen to look for (better tagging will be of use as well) and it's gonna be a very in the background thing, since I won't directly post there, but I figured I'd bring mention to it here anyways, because you may or may not discover a thing or two that you really like, since I have A LOT to put there.

Well maybe one day Compile will let them have Camus. I would adore to see him again. He was like Arle's big brother figure and it makes me sad we don't see him anymore. ( I'd kill to see him react to Schezo and Satan and their relations with Arle hahaha )

Well also if I remember 100% correctly Camus wasn't actually a real person in Madou 1 and was instead created by Arle's teacher to serve as someone to guide and kinda motivate the kids during their tests. Though since he was reappearing in the later madou games maybe it's safe to say he's managed to become his own person which is something I like to think.

Again hope Compile finally gives Sega rights to the rest of the Madou cast. It's not like they're using them anyways. I mean we got Incubus and Succubus ( sort of? She sounds a completely different character with what's written on her cards. ). Though they did appear in Puyo games so perhaps I'm just being too hopeful.

Ooh! Well, I'll just go on ahead and give it a look-see.

BTW, speaking of Sig, there's a cute pic I posted on my Tumblr. I was wondering if you wanted to add it to your Sig-centric blog. It's the first post on my main page.

Yeah, Camus would certainly be someone Arle could have a more closer connection to, especially in regards to the people from her world that she usually hangs out with.

Also, I've heard about Camus not being a real person, but instead being the spirit of the elderly teacher's grandson. So that's actually a thing? Weird...

Well, according to Puyo Puyo's 25th Anniversary book (which contains info on EVERYONE who's ever appeared in a Puyo game), the Succubus in Puyo Quest and the one from the Compile's Puyo games ARE one and the same. Also, from what I've seen in her cards, she seems to have the same personality as in the Compile-era games. I mean, MAYBE she's toned down her sex-lust, but otherwise...

Heh, I was already ahead of you, on that one.

If I remember correctly the Game Gear and Mega Drive versions both have different answers on what Camus is, could be wrong on that one though and the ''he's a illusion created by Arle's teacher'' one is the one I always heard.

I guess they also toned down her BSDM tendencies cause she seems like a completely different person now. What a shame those moments had me cackling to the point I nearly died.

I miss the fact she whipped Schezo a few times in a bdsm-like dungeon.
