Here is a big list in excrutiating detail of each Wario Land Shake It stage theme and their corresponding escape theme. Some tracks don't have a pairing at all, while others you'll be surprised to see how they got shuffled around! Big thanks to the TCRF page on Wario Land Shake It, and the OST on YouTube by ViviVGM for links/appearances of the songs
Aboard the Sweet Stuff [correct]
Aboard the Sweet Stuff (Escape) [correct]
While the file names and style match, I'm not quite sure if this one has a matching leitmotif or if I just can't hear it
Stonecarving City [correct]
Stonecarving City (Escape) [correct]
Much different songs but definitely use the same leitmotif
Whoopsy Desert [correct]
Whoopsy Desert (Escape) [correct]
Both file names and styles match, and 1:48 of the escape theme definitely sounds the most similar, but there isn't really a shared leitmotif between these two, and while that's fine and they don't always need a matching leitmotif to be related, I did find this bit from The Cutting Room Floor interesting: (could this explain the lack of a leitmotif?)
egypt_NEW20070125-01-16b (Whoopsy Desert) - January 25, 2007, named after the level theme, indicates this is a new revision of the song
EGY_RET2 (Whoopsy Desert return) - named after the level theme, indicates that there was possibly another desert level return theme
Foulwater Falls [INCORRECT!]
Foulwater Falls (Escape) [INCORRECT!]
FINALLY, the first pairing that DOESN'T match! I briefly mentioned it in another post, but there was an unused track in the game called "Plumber's Cave" and I believe that song was a level theme meant to match with Foulwater Fall's escape theme. If you listen closely, you can tell that both the lower and the higher octave piano in the beginning of the escape theme are the same as SMB1's Underground leitmotif used in Plumber's Cave. Then I found out that CM30 was already one step ahead of me and already made a post about it, which was then based off another post! Is this the story behind Wario Land Shake It's Plumber's Cave? And that's not all, here's what TCRF had to say about the file name
chance_wario (Foulwater Falls) - name seems to indicate that it is one of the first songs made for the game, possibly meant for something other than a level
R_Tee-20061031mix-16b441 (Foulwater Falls return) - October 31, 2006, the "R" likely returns for "return", but the "Tee" is unknown
Run Down Pyramid [standalone???]
TCRF says this one's file name is "woodbass" for it's musical style. If you refer to Whoopsy Desert, you'll see that it possibly had an earlier version. I'm not quite hearing any matching leitmotifs, but could this have been meant for another song?
Just Plains [INCORRECT!]
Just Plains (Escape) [INCORRECT!]
If you listen to Savannah Valley followed by Just Plains' escape theme, you'll realize that the two pair together and the former is a slower version with the same leitmotif. If you're still having trouble hearing it, please direct your attention towards 1:01 of Just Plains' escape theme
Subwarine Boss [standalone???]
In the playlist this one's listed as Wavy Waters (Escape) but it's more of a boss theme. All of the Subwarine levels have different filenames, but this one doesn't match any and is called "deep2"
Mt. Lava Lava [correct]
Mt. Lava Lava (Escape) [correct]
Even though Mt. Lava Lava and Glittertown have their own corresponding level and escape themes, I can't help but notice that if Mt. Lava Lava's stage theme was instead Glittertown's stage theme, then that would mean double Greenhorn Forest (ehhhh it's probably nothing since there's a little bit of it in Bad Manor, but I can't help but wonder)
Wreck Train [correct]
Wreck Train (Escape) [correct]
This one's a little tougher for leitmotifs but there are a few simalarites and the file names match
Stonetooth Cave [correct???]
Stonetooth Cave (Escape) [correct???]
It's All Mine [standalone???]
I just can't seem to hear how these songs are related, maybe ya'll might notice something I didn't? Here's what TCRF had to say about these filenames but interestingly enough I only saw 2/3 so I think one of them seems to be missing, maybe that's the key to this mystery? (Also Stonetooth Cave's escape theme reminds me of Windbreak Bay, I wonder if it was going to be a Subwarine Theme or something)
CAVE1 (Its-All Mine) - named after the level theme, indicates that it was the first cave theme made
80motar0818-32k16b (Stonetooth Cave return) - August 18, name is unknown, the only "return" song not labeled as such, meaning it may have been for a normal level originally
Glittertown [correct]
Glittertown (Escape) [correct]
Remember what I said about Mt. Lava Lava? Those file names seem to match but Glittertown's don't. I wonder if double Greenhorn forest was going to happen after all? (ehhhh it's probably nothing, anyway here are the file names from TCRF)
W3-mix-20061031-16b441 (Glittertown) - October 31, named for World 3
casino_ret0709 (Glittertown return) - July 9, named after the level theme
Ropey Jungle [correct]
Ropey Jungle (Escape) [correct]
Soggybog River [standalone???]
We got another Stonetooth Cave situation, because I'm not quite hearing what's supposed to pair with what. The file names match as "Jungle" for Ropey Jungle, but Soggybog River is in the files as "7beat1", all of them have versions with and without rain sound effects added
Airytale Castle [correct???]
Airytale Castle (Escape) [correct???]
I wonder what ya'll think about this one? Sure, it kinda fits, but nothing is really jumping out to me for a connection and they have different file names. Here's what TCRF had to say on the matter:
SHINDEN (Airytale Castle) - name refers to the level theme (shinden meaning "temple" or "sacred place")
tenku_RET1 (Airytale Castle return) - named for the level theme (tenkuu meaning "sky" ), one of the few return tracks that does not use the same name as the normal level theme
Mount Bighill [correct]
Mount Bighill (Escape) [correct]
Finally, back to normal pairings with nothing to report
Slipshod Slopes [correct]
Slipshod Slopes (Escape) [correct]
Two in a row? They're obviously related and got Christmas bells and matching file names, but I'm not hearing any leitmotifs, and while it's like that sometimes, interestingly enough, Slipshod Slopes is referred to as "SNOW2" so maybe the song had another version which would explain it
Bad Manor [correct]
Bad Manor (Escape) [correct]
Last one! They both got the same leitmotif and file names as "GHOST" but interestingly there's one labelled as "GHOST_RET2" which would hint at 2 escape theme versions, TCRF has 3 filenames listed but unfortunately I'm not sure what the 3rd one is, perhaps it's something that could be looked into as well as there being 2/3 between Stonetooth Cave and It's All Mine
...Phew, holy moly! That was quite a lot, I hope this posts fine and I didn't use too many links! I'd love to hear about more connections to songs in case I missed anything or didn't hear any leitmotifs too well, or just any thoughts in general about all of this. Thanks for reading!
