What is the blue under Wario's eyes and why does he have it?

Insomnia? Too tired from adventuring? Constantly has black eyes? Or maybe the blue lines are actually just really weird makeup...????
I want to hear you guys' opinions, or just creative takes on what it is and why. (The new semi-realistic renders don't help much with the "they're just baggy eyes" theory, since they're modeled like he's put pieces of plastic around his eyeballs, see below.)

On more serious note, I like to think that his face is based on Japanese folklore creatures masks. Many of those have weird details in their design, including circles around eyes.

I like to think that his face is based on Japanese folklore creatures masks. Many of those have weird details in their design, including circles around eyes.

These are some really great observations, and likely true. Considering the fact Wario's, y'know, Anti-Mario and was created by Japanese people.

It seems they are based on the same kind of eye rings you see in depictions of japanese Oni. Considering mythological references are everywhere across the Mario Land series it doesn't seem like a stretch at all to look at Wario's design that way.

Maybe this minigame is about Wario trying to stop an awkward family visit.
